Before he was a Big Star, Alex Chilton was a Box Top

Date of Review:  Mar 19, 2000
The Bottom Line: Alex Chilton sang the AM radio classics "The Letter," "Soul Deep" and "Cry Like A Baby" while with The Box Tops.
Review: "Give me a ticket for an aeroplane / ain't got time to take a fast train / lonely days are gone / I'm a goin' home / my baby just wrote me a letter..."

It's hard to believe Alex Chilton was all of 16 when he sang "The Letter" as lead...

"Michael Bolton? That's Not Soul Music! Alex Chilton, That's True White-Boy Soul!"

Date of Review:  May 11, 2002
The Bottom Line: "Soul Deep" is an excellent introduction to the Box Tops, one of the greatest blue-eyed soul groups around featuring future rock legend Alex Chilton. (4.5 out of 5).
Review: If there was one figure that made his mark in rock n? roll, it was Memphis singer-songwriter Alex Chilton. In the 1960s, he scored hits with his first band as part of the Box Tops were they had been widely considered as one of the great blue-eyed...

The Box Tops And The Memphis Sound

Date of Review:  Feb 17, 2002
The Bottom Line: This band wasn't around long, and Chilton did his best work later with Big Star. Still, this music is a pleasant distraction in an historical sense.
Review: The Box Tops were only together for about three years, and maybe not for that long--it's rumoured that after the astounding success of their hit single The Letter, only Alex Chilton appeared on the remaining work of the band, backed by a group of...

THE BEST OF THE BOX TOPS

Date of Review:  Mar 9, 2001
The Bottom Line: ONE OUTSTANDING CD & A MUST TO ADD TO ANY FAN';S COLLECTION. THIS GROUP SOUNDS LIKE A COMBINATION OF ";GARY PUCKETT & THE UNION GAP"; AND THE ";CLASSICS IV";.
Review: No this review is not about the Tops of Cereal Boxes. This review concerns the group known as the ?BOX TOPS? who formed in March 1967 in Memphis, TN and the CD ?THE BEST OF THE BOX TOPS?.

The group starts out under the name of ?Ronnie &...
