Author's Review
For several years at Halloween, I have long searched for a Gomez to match my Morticia. :) To me, Gomez and Morticia Addams are one of the most romantic and passionate couples of all times.
The Addams Family shows this in great detail. Every time Morticia speaks French, glances at Gomez, or throws a subtle hint at him, Gomez is all over her, kissing her with passion, seducing her with words, and just being an all around seductor.... sigh! :) Someone catch me, I'm swooning!
Seriously, I absolutely love The Addams Family and always have ever since the first time I saw it. I'm currently on my second copy and from the way it looks, I guess I'll be clicking on the link at the left of this article to go to half.com to find another copy for my collection.
For those of you who are not familar with the plot of the movie, I'll summarize it. The Addams family is a family of a mother, father, daughter, son, butler, and grandmother who live in a spooky old house which looks like it came directly out of Transylvania. They love bad weather, darkness, unhappiness, and enjoy pain and even death!
Gomez who is the husband of Morticia has tortured himself for years for driving away his long lost brother Fester after an argument. Gomez's attorney, Tully, dreams up a scheme to try to get the Addams family money which is an endless fortune by dressing up a lone shark's adult son to try to impersonal Fester.
Fester appears to be the real thing at times but is doubted a lot. In fact, he starts to appear to be more of an Addams than what his mother "wants" him to be. This sets up a fantastic legalistic conspiracy to have Fester inherit the entire Addams' fortune and leave Gomez and his family homeless and poor.
But is that the end of the story? Fester starts to wonder who he really is. Is he really Gordon, the son of a lone sharking woman who is an ultimate man emasculator? Or is he really Fester Addams who had lost his memory and is now returned home again?
Of course, there's infinitely more than this, but to me giving you all of the details spoils the fun of this fantastic comedy film. A great rescue and finale ends this wonderful movie where there is an ultimate happy ending but I'll leave it to you to discover what it is!
Throughout the movie, there are great stories behind the story. I've seen this movie too many times to even count and I still see things in the background of the film scenes that make me laugh. Also, the incredible score of this movie is fabulous and matches the intensity of the scenes perfectly. I am currently looking for a copy of the soundtrack for my music collection as well.
There are a two things that I don't like about The Addams Family
First is the fact that there is a seance performed in the movie. I don't believe in seances summoning up the dead because of my Christian beliefs. However, there is an absolutely hysterical scene in this one with "Thing" (a living hand) which does break this up, but I still don't like it because it bothers me.
The other thing that I don't like about this movie is that the wonderful man who portrayed Gomez, Raul Julia, is now deceased. To me, he was the ultimate Gomez perfect to the "T", and I shall miss him. Even though he was also in Addams Family Values his loss truly caused me to lose interest now in any other versions of The Addams Family after the second movie.
Other than that, I have to say that I thoroughly enjoy The Addams Family every time I watch it. It's a great movie, definitely better than television and I highly recommend it.
