Bringing the Action Up Close

After purchasing the original Canon EOS Rebel second-hand few years ago, I realized that the 35-80mm lens that came with the camera did not have enough magnification to bring auto racing actions up close. So I decided to start shopping for a zoom lens. I found this Canon lens for sale, about $250 new. I didn't really know how to compare quality and price among different lenses at the time, so I bought it because I needed the zoom, it worked with my Rebel, and the price was right.

After using it for about 3 years, I have been very happy with the lens. I have even used the lens to try my hand at wildlife photography. I have taken very good night images with the lens (with a tripod, of course), with pretty good results. The lens has helped me capture some very good auto racing actions (some of them are posted on my webpage: http://www.geocities.com/mini-ss/prorace.html ).

The lens uses the Canon "Ultrasonic" motor, which is very quiet. However, autofocusing is an Achilles' heel for this lens, as the motor doesn't move very fast and sometimes misses the focus. I now use manual focus when I'm taking action shots. (This may be due to the fact that my EOS Rebel has primitive autofocusing algorithm) For taking non-action shots, I autofocus occasionally with very good results.

Even with the camera's automatic shutter/aperture settings, you should be able to capture fast actions with this lens without resorting to the grainy 800 speed film. (I use 200~400 speed) I've successfully taken photos of CART cars going 160 mph only about 30 yards away, as well as P-51 Mustangs and Air Force's F-16 Thunderbirds flying overhead at Reno Air Races.

In my opinion, this Canon EF 75-300mm lens is great for an experienced amateur photographer like myself.
