Canon Zoom Lens Perfect for Every Occasion ? Even Portraits

Date of Review:  Sep 7, 2000
Review: If you haven?t heard, I like to take pictures. Let me rephrase that. I?m hopelessly, utterly, pathetically obsessed with photography. The addiction began when I was just a small child, who stole my parents? camera and went hog-wild at the zoo. My...

Expensive, yet still a bargain!

Date of Review:  Jun 12, 2000
Review: This lens had barely hit the "streets" when I first tried to buy it. Advance publicity had made it such a hot item that it was unavailable for weeks. By that time cooler, more sensible minds had convinced me I shouldn't purchase it. I bought a much...

Canon EF 75-300mm f4-5.6 III - Decent Starter Telephoto... But Not Much More Beyond That

Date of Review:  Jan 26, 2008
The Bottom Line: The Canon EF 75-300mm f4-5.6 III is Canon's lowest-end telephoto kit lens. It will make true amateurs happy, but beyond that there are better options.
Review: As I was looking into getting a nice mid-range telephoto lens for myself, I borrowed a low-end Canon EF 75-300mm f4-5.6 III lens. This is the lowest-end variant of Canon's consumer level 75-300mm market. The version I used was the non-USM variant. I...

A wildlife photographer's dream

Date of Review:  Sep 7, 2000
Review: History:

I have always been fascinated shooting wildlife (animal and human) in their natural habitat (My favorite: a trip to Kruger National Park, South Africa). This sometimes requires an extremely steady hand and/or a really fast shutter...

Get the IS version if you can afford it--not the best of Canon's offerings

Date of Review:  Apr 7, 2005
The Bottom Line: There are better choices. If you need high focal length a single lens may be a better choice. Not up to Canon's usual high standards.
Review: I bought this lens at the same time I bought my digital rebel body because I wanted a somewhat long zoom for shooting the tigers at busch gardens (from several hundred feet up on the bridge). For what I wanted it for, 300mm just isn't quite enough...

A solid higher-end consumer lens

Date of Review:  Mar 9, 2005
The Bottom Line: Strikes a very good balance between weight, cost and optical performance.
Review: Its always hard to get the perfect lens. Especially if you don't want to spend a ton of money.

In the "ton of money" catagory, you have Canon's "L" lens series. Generally, the prices start at $1000 and go up from there. Even if you do have...

Canon 75-300 III USM: Inexpensive and handy!

Date of Review:  Jun 19, 2000
Review: This lens was very cheap, and very nice addition to my gear. I bought the lens for a little under $200 through an internet retailer. The 75-300 range is very useful in many situations including close-ups and portraits.

I want to stress...

the inexpensive alternative

Date of Review:  Jul 2, 2000
Review: The 75-300 does the job and that's all. It has no features that make you say WOW!

Construction: poor... It has a "cheap" feeling. The rings are not tight, so the controls are not precise. You can hear some pieces ratteling when you shake...

Bringing the Action Up Close

Date of Review:  Apr 28, 2000
Review: After purchasing the original Canon EOS Rebel second-hand few years ago, I realized that the 35-80mm lens that came with the camera did not have enough magnification to bring auto racing actions up close. So I decided to start shopping for a zoom...

The hidden gem of the Zuiko Digital line!

Date of Review:  Jul 17, 2006
The Bottom Line: Superb sharpness and macro performance for the price. Unless you require a weatherproof lens, this one is a no-brainer.
Review: Continuing my review series of Olympus Zuiko Digital lenses for the Four Thirds system digital cameras, I've chosen to review the ZD 35mm macro lens. This lens is part of the "budget" range of lenses, and is currently the only lens capable of 1:1...
