Author's Review
I know what some of you are thinking, "Show some respect Fader... Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter 2 made fighting games popular and without them you wouldn't have your precious Tekken games."
You might be right about that, but the Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter series are merely Tiger hand held electronic games in comparison to Tekken Tag Tournament.
Namco has truly outdone themselves with Tekken Tag Tournament, the fourth installment of the very successful Tekken series, almost totally exclusive to the Play Station consoles.
This is the fighting of fighting games! No longer will you be left out while your friend is playing. From now on you will be right in the middle of the action, ready at any moment to be tagged in to help defeat your opponents. Or you can go head to head with your friend to see just who is the better Tekken player.... or if you want to settle it in a non-violent manner you can find out who is better at bowling.
Whatever your intentions are, I doubt you'll get bored with seven, count 'em, 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 game modes to choose from, with one hidden mode.
Arcade Mode: The main part of the game. Work your way through the fights to get to The Unknown, your final opponent. Defeat The Unknown repeatedly to view end videos for your fighters, unlock Tekken Bowling and additional characters.
Time Attack Mode: Win as many fights in as little time as possible. Top ten rankings will be saved.
Survival Mode: This is the tough one. Win as many fights as possible with only one life. Your life will start out completely full in the first fight. After that it depends on how well you and your tag team partner can fight. Again, top ten rankings will be saved.
NOTE: The computers skills increase as your number of wins increases.
VS Battle Mode: Fight head to head with the friend I mentioned above. You each control both of the fighters on your tag teams. You might not come out as friends in the end. HA HA!
1 On 1 Battle Mode: Fight head to head or against the computer, but only one on one as the name of the mode suggests.
Team Battle Mode: Choose a number of fighters to battle against your friends team or the computer.
Practice Mode: Hone your skills against an opponent as they just stand there and take it. You also have the option of making the opponent fight back, to hone your blocking and countering skills (which comes in handy in the other game modes).
NOTE: You can view the command list of moves your fighter has, and demonstrate what the moves look like and the button combinations that enable them.
Tekken Bowling (Hidden): Explains itself.
Well now, sounds pretty good so far eh? Now we move onto details such as graphics, character selection and moves, game speed, sound/music, and all that other fun stuff.
The graphics are very likable, especially when it comes to character movement and definition. The backgrounds are also detailed very well depending on the level. The end videos for the characters are pretty good. Once you unlock The Unknown, beat the Arcade Mode again with The Unknown to see the final video. It's the reason why Play Station 2 was made in my opinion.
There are over thirty characters to choose from, and a combined total of over 2000 moves.
The game speed is excellent! There are no choppy movements, or bogging.
Music files can be irritating depending on the level, but that's why TVs have volume control. You can also adjust the music and SFX volume within the game.
One of the many things I like about this game is the fact that you can totally customize the control configuration.
OK, now you know why I think that Tekken Tag Tournament is the best fighting game made to date. It walks up and kicks other fighting games in the head. It's easily my favorite and most played PS2 game. It offers so much freedom of fighting style that's meant to suit the player. There isn't too much more that can be said about Tekken Tag Tournament, except after owning it for over a year I'm still not bored with it, and that in itself really does say a lot.
WARNING: WHEN ALCOHOL IS INVOLVED, TEKKEN TAG TOURNAMENT MAY BECOME A RELENTLESS DRINKING GAME!!! HA HA HA (make up your own rules for it. They change every time my friends and I play it.)
