Author's Review
Talk about favorite games.. this is my all time favorite 3D battle game. The graphics and the characters rock, along with the detailed storyline. I guess the bad part about it, is that even though Tekken Tag is scheduled to come out for home use on Playstation 2, the main storyline ends along with the game, unfortunately.
Now, it's kinda wierd how I came to like this game. I got a regular Playstation kinda late a long time ago, compared to all the rest of the kids at school, and the most I had was a few borrowed games and a red demo disk. And I saw Tekken 2. After I played that, I knew I wanted the actual game, because one, I felt that Jun Kazama rocked, and two, I was tired of fighting Jack 2, Michelle, Nina, King, and Lei Wulong over and over and over again on the demo. So, around my birthday that same year, my brother came by and he bought me Tekken 3. At first I was disapointed, because I was stubborn about how T3 is not T2. Well, I was right on that part, but not in the way I was thinking at the time. And besides, when he got me the strategy guide along with it, I figured what the heck, and play the game.
Needless to say, I loved it. The graphics rocked, and the soundtrack is the best I've ever heard out of a video game. I mean, even some of the arcade BGM's sound pretty good. The only bad thing about it, was that Jun wasn't in it, and when I read in the guide that this Ogre had killed her, I was immediately like, "Oh, it's on, now."
The only other difference between Tekken 2 and Tekken 3 is probably the added supercharge feature. This, is useless. You hold down all four attack buttons, and your char is surrounded with light for around 6 seconds or so. This makes all your attacks that connect cleanly count as a counter-hit, and even if they block, they take around 2 points of damage. But the bad part is, YOU CAN'T BLOCK WHILE DOING IT! I found that out the hard way when I was fighting Paul Phoenix with Ling Xiaoyu, and I was eating the pavement after a Pheonix Smasher.
Of course, if you have played the other Tekkens, that stage 10 is the final stage. In Tekken 3, your boss is Ogre. You first see him in his sub-human form. This is the most difficult form of him to beat. After around 25 continues, I finally whipped him ((I was playing as Nina Williams.. that must've been it..)) and thought I was through. But then there is this short cut where Orge picks up Heihachi by the throat, the screen goes white, and all of a sudden, you're facing this... THING with wings and a claw as a hand that is huge and is towering over you drooling, and the game says "Final Round.. FIGHT!" Needless to say, when I first saw True Ogre, I had to pause the game to get my thoughts together.
But don't let his looks intimidate you. That was my problem. I was basically worrying about nothing. True Ogre is too big for you to really lose him, no matter how black the backround is. He sidesteps, but it's like 3/4 of his body is still in front of you. And if you just keep putting on the speed, he's down in a couple of seconds. That was a surprize for me, because I'm used to fighting Kazuya within an inch of my life, then turn around and have to fight Devil for two more rounds.
What else.. oh yeah. The hidden characters. There are tons of characters to unlock, although Tekken 2 still has what was it, around 23 characters for you to unlock, Tekken 3 made up for it by adding Theater Mode and Tekken Ball Mode. Those modes rock, even though I did get tired of getting beat by Gon in Ball Mode. Theater Mode lets you see each ending movies of each of the characters in the game, lets you see the ones from Tekken and Tekken 2, AND listen to the BGM music without hearing the punches and hits and the annoying grunts along with it. All you have to do is beat the game with ALL of the characters, including the two hidden ones.
Speaking of hidden characters... the only ones that are really hidden, are Gon and Dr. B. DR. B IS THE MOST USELESS CHARACTER I HAVE EVER PLAYED IN MY ENTIRE TEKKEN 3 LIFE! I had to get that out, I'm sorry. But it's one of those characters that only the game can play correctly. Dr. B is a wierd combination of Lei and Eddy Gordo. And he's around 73 years old. If you don't know how he fights even after you beat him around the third time after Tekken Force, then God help you. The match starts, and he falls to the ground like he was shot in the back or something. It makes you wonder what's wrong with him. But he does that for the entire match mostly. Don't punch him, he'll counter. Just wait until he gets up. It's hard to face him in Time Attack Mode if you want a good time, because fighting AND playing as him takes time, patience, and effort. Did I mention patience?
But all and all, this game rocks. It's hard to find something wrong with it, it's so good. But I found one: Why did Jun and Kazuya name their kid Jin? You couldn't find a better name? But other than that, this is probably the best 3D fighting game around, hands down.
