Pros: Great sound, lots of options/inputs, remembers settings
Cons: Gets hot sometimes, small volume drop-offs (see below)
The Bottom Line: Great buy for the money, more options than a beginner would ever need.
Review: I chose this as my first receiver based on its price, reviews, and options. It has plenty of analog inputs as well as three digital (1 coax, 2 optical). It remembers your settings for each mode and lets you assign certain devices to different inputs. I...

Pros: Mid-range price, high-end featureset.
Cons: Controls and setup a wee bit awkward.
The Bottom Line: For 250 bucks, you get superb sounding audio and all the features you could need for years to come.
Review: Technics has always been one of the best companies to turn to for high-middle-end audio equipment. The SA-DX950 is no exception.

Pros: Sounds great, priced right. Lots of inputs and outputs.
Cons: No S-Video in/out.
The Bottom Line: I definitely recommend this receiver to anyone looking for a digital home theater receiver that doesn't break the bank.
Review: I upgraded from an earlier model Technics receiver in order to take advantage of digital audio. Hookup was relatively simple (after running out to the store to buy the cables I needed), and configuration of the receiver took only a few minutes.

Pros: Value for $, ease of use, meets my needs
Cons: Displays small, hard to read from 15 ft
The Bottom Line: Meets all my needs
Review: Crunch time, the 30 yr old receiver's tuner had been giving us problems, it also had no remote. Two trips to get it repaired over the last 10 years meant good money thrown after a bad receiver.

Pros: High power, great jack pack, Crisp Sound low distortion.
Cons: Setup, lacks simple features such as clock and sleep timer.
The Bottom Line: Technics has been know for their high quality components for many years. The DX-950 is perfect for those with a DVD player.

Pros: Easy set up, great price for $$$, sound is superb
Cons: Display, better directions, heat
The Bottom Line: You don't have to spend life savings to get great surround. Middle of the line, great price (also rebate) for anyone looking to invest.
Review: Have recently upgraded to this new unit from a DD Philipps. What a difference!! Yes this has more power and DTS capabilities, but I know I'm running good when I can't hear my wife yelling at me from up stairs.
Set up was quite easy (and I'm... |

Pros: Inexpensive, powerful, good DVD sound.
Cons: Poor remote control, limited jack set, lack of treble/base control in simulated surround mode.
The Bottom Line: Great for DVD/VHS/TV surround sound and unbeatable for the price. Not particularly impressive for classical or large ensemble/orchestral music listening.
Review: It's pretty hard to beat this CR "best value" receiver for the price (1/3 the price of the competing Onkyo DS696) but be prepared to give up some important features. The DVD/SatelliteTV surround performance is excellent in both digital modes.

Pros: price, price, quality.
Cons: confusing to set up, crappy remote
Review: I had been wanting a surround sound receiver for a few years and finally broke down and got it. Long story short, I got a closeout/ demo from Best Buy for $120. I thought it would be ok for a year or so and as it turns out it has lasted me for about 3 ...
