If it sounds too good to be true...
Date of Review: Aug 31, 2002
The Bottom Line: I would not recommend it. It is overly complicated and potentially confusing.
I borrowed this book from the library on the recommendation of several fellow Homeschoolers. It seemed to be THE book to use with your child.
I found it overly complicated, teaching the child to recognize certain phonetic pronunciations through the use of specialized markings over the letters in the book.
This did not seem appropriate to me, nor wise, as those markings will not be found outside of the book, nor will the child later be able to easily forget them as he attempts to study the diacritical markings used in dictionaries and pronunciation guides.
It seemed to me that the overall idea was very simple--recognition through repetitive drill, which is not a new idea in the least.
Finally, I was not impressed by the overly serious tone that the authors took regarding their method over other methods. It did not prove to be true for our situation, not because it was merely "not our style", but was unnecessarily burdensome.
I am grateful I was able to evaluate this book at the library, since I would have been deeply disappointed to have spent money on it.
