Successful with My 3 Year old
Date of Review: Apr 11, 2000
The Bottom Line: It works! Produced a voracious reader in our house!
My three year old wanted to start doing "school" with her older brother whom we home school. She even specifically asked to learn to read. After trying to figure out the best method to use with a 3 year old, I decided to give 100 Easy Lessons a try.
Wow! After 12 lessons, she is reading 3 and 4 letter words from the book and feeling very proud of herself. I am very impressed with the way the book is done. (Later in the book, they read sentences and funny little stories that make it very rewarding for them!)
The kids are able to not only learn to sound out words, but also learn to write them. The book has handwriting included (along with instructions on how to teach them to make each letter), which is a plus. It allows the child a "hands on" way to reinforce what they are learning.
It is phonics based, so that we can continue to build on the basics once she is done with the book. The whole thing is "scripted" which I find a bit annoying sometimes, and we venture away from that. It was a little intimidating for her to have me read the script that is in the book because she realized that is not how Mom usually talks to her.
Overall, though, I think this is a wonderful teaching tool for all parents, whether they home school or not!
UPDATE: We went straight from 100 Easy Lessons to Bob books and then into first grade readers and phonics work with my daughter. She is now six years old and reading on a 4th grade level. I believe it is all because of the phonics base and the encouragement that was provided by 100 Easy Lessons! This is an absolutely wonderful program!
