Author's Review
About 3 years ago I was given a Canon Rebel 2000 as a Christmas present. At the time, I suggested a "kit" I knew nothing about the camera or lens that came with it (Tamron 28-80mm). As time went on, and I learned more about the camera and photography, I knew I needed to add another lens to my collection. I chose Tamron AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 LD 1:2 Macro (in black, not silver) and have been VERY happy with the results.
First of all, I knew I wanted a 70-200mm or 70-300mm lens. So I started out pricing lenses in those categories. I had been happy with the results that my 28-80mm Tamron was giving me, so I was focusing much of my search in the Tamron line.
After narrowing down some selections, I headed to the camera store with my camera in hand. I suggest this to ANYONE looking to add a lens to their collection. I tried on a Tamron 70-200mm, it didn't give me the zoom I was looking for. So I asked the guy to show me the 70-300mm in stock.
I tried a few Canon's which were VERY heavy and MUCH more expensive then the Tamron's. Then I tried 2 of the Tamron 70-300mm, one with the 1:2 Macro and one with the 1:4 Macro.
Macro is the feature on a lens that allows you to do super close up pictures of items (such as flowers and what not). My 28-80mm Tamron lens, did not come with a decent Macro feature, so that made the choice for me, very easy!
Next step was to try this new lens out. I ran around and shot a roll of black and white film trying to utilize the zoom and the macro. I was very happy with how smoothly the lens transitioned between focal lengths. Also figuring out how to use the Macro feature was pretty easy. And I really love how lightweight the lens is. For it's size, it has to be one of the lightest lenses.
The pictures turned out amazing! The texture and clarity of the macro pictures was awesome, and the lengths to which I could now zoom was outstanding!
I have to say, for the money, this lens is an EXCELLENT purchase for those looking to upgrade! The weight, the ease of use, the results are great!
I'd have to say the ONLY downside really has nothing to do with this particular lens, just with greater focal lengths in general. You'll find there are times (especially indoors) when you'll need to use a tripod to prevent camera shake. That is true of any lens though.
