For those of you who don’t know, Daddy Yankee is a veteran reggaeton singer from Puerto Rico. Reggaeton is a mix of salsa, rap and other Latin rhythms. Usually you will have the chorus in a very danceable beat and the rest of the song mixes that with some rap. Reggaeton at its finest comes from Puerto Rico and has been around for about 15 years. Daddy Yankee has been around almost from the beginning of reggaeton and has made his way into world fame.
Now, about Talento de Barrio, Daddy Yankee’s latest album.
I absolutely love this CD. I am a Daddy Yankee fan and I have bought some of his latest CDs (Barrio Fino en Directo, El Cartel) before. I loved Barrio Fino because the songs had so much rhythm and some of the songs actually had nice lyrics. I was not too impressed with El Cartel because most of the songs sounded the same to me and you couldn’t really dance to them. They were the type of song where they tell everyone how good they are and blah blah blah. But then I read a review online about his newest CD, Talento de Barrio, saying that he was coming back to his roots and the songs had more Latin rhythms than his previous album. My boyfriend saw how excited I was and he got me the CD.
I play this CD everyday in my car when I drive to work and back home. It’s a fairly long drive so I love to listen to music that will keep me animated, happy, singing and dancing.
The CD has 15 songs. The song “Pose” is the one that has been played in the radio the most. It’s about him asking a girl to pose, as in for a photograph or in a runway. I love the beat of this song, it’s so contagious. It makes you want to dance as if you were actually posing yourself. At least to me, anyway J.
Some of the songs are about pretty women, others about real love, and others about how you he is (I guess these are the common subjects in reggaeton).
The song “Somes de Calle” has a nice beat too but it’s not really danceable, at least not like the usual latin songs. The chorus has a nice beat to it and I love listening to this song too. The song “Que Tengo Que Hacer” reminds me of Jamaican reggae with a Latin touch. Daddy Yankee does a great job with this song. It’s romantic too. Another very nice song is “De La Paz y De La Guerra.” It talks about a couple where the girl is always fighting and agitated, while the guy is more peaceful and tries to understand her but it’s hard for him. It’s kind of romantic because he talks about not leaving even when her personality makes it so hard for them to stay together. The beat of this song is really nice. I love it and I dance to this song all the time in my car.
My favorite song is definitely “Llamado de Emergencia.” I think this is the most romantic reggaeton song I have ever heard. In the song, his girl just left him and he wants her back. He says he can’t live without her, that he’s dying waiting for her. Every part of the song is romantic. Even my mother-in-law who is in her 70s liked this song. It really cheers you up.
In summary, this CD is awesome because the music is just so happy and upbeat and some of the songs are even romantic. It uses mostly Latin rhythms (salsa, etc.), rap and reggae. It’s hard to describe the music in paper, but I would suggest that you listen to samples of the songs on one of the websites and then you can decide if you like it.
I am so glad I got this CD. My long trips in the car wouldn’t be the same without it.
