Great Desktop System (aka CD-X9)

Date of Review: Jan 6, 2006

The Bottom Line:  I recommend this mini desktop stereo because it delivers good performance at a rock bottom price
I got this at Costco for $129, although it seems to have been re-labeled for Costco as the CD-X9. I am pretty sure it is identical to the TEAC MC-DX20B as described on the TEAC website.

I am using it as a desktop music unit. I bought it because the desktop footprint is almost nothing, and it has an AUX input for playing audio right out of my laptop. I can play MP3s from my laptop, streaming audio from the web, CDs, CD-MP3, AM/FM.

The performance is outstanding for such a small inexpensive unit. The sub-woofer on the floor does all the heavy lifting, leaving the desktop control unit no thicker than a fat book. The thin speakers (are they electrostatic?) can be wall mounted, but they just sit at the back of my desk. The sound is crisp, clean, and seems to my aged ears to be distortion-free. You won't shake the walls with it, but that is not what it is designed for. Radio reception is very good. The remote is surprisingly well made, and has a nice firm heft to it.

I give it five stars, as long as the CD player doesn't die. Mechanics are always the weakest link!
