this unit is limited to only a few brands of DVD-R, and then only 4x or less. BUT they will send you a CD to upgrade the unit to accept universal disks, IF you are lucky enough to get a real tech support person who can tell you this is the problem. I made 6 calls because every tech suggestion didn't work until I got lucky on the 6th call with an intelligent tech, otherwise, each previous call seemed to be breaking up a party at the call center, where they were not trained - I got 5 bogus solutions ('turn it off and wait 45 minutes', 'you have to reformat a new disc to get it to record') NOT! You need to get a good tech on the phone. None of this is online or in the manual.
