Alfred Hitchcock's Suspicion (1941)

by   artbyjude , top reviewer in Movies at Epinions.com ,  Sep 17, 2002
Pros: Fontaine and Grant, with some help from Nigel Bruce, and the finesse of Alfred Hitchcock
Cons: Only available in VHS format. (So I'm spoiled.)
The Bottom Line: This is pure Hitchcock entertainment. Great Performances, great thriller, with Grant and Fontaine.
Review: Here’s a new genre for the world, how about a “thrilling romantic comedy” as only Alfred Hitchcock could doit!? And you get the added bonus of seeing Cary Grant in his prime, and an academy award winning performance by Joan Fontaine. They don’t come much...

Suspicion (1941)

by   BrianKoller ,  Nov 27, 1999
Pros: suspense, comedy, cast, direction
Cons: cop-out ending
Review: "Suspicion" is one of Alfred Hitchcock's best films, but it hasn't received the praise given freely to his more famous movies. This is partly because of the ending, which unlike the similar-themed "Shadow of a Doubt", 'cops out'....

What might have been

by   Dani257 ,  Apr 5, 2000
Pros: Chilling, good performance by Cary Grant and Joan Fontaine
Cons: The ending
Review: Suspicion is probably best known as the movie with the 'cop-out' ending. Why would this be the focus of an otherwise suspenseful and charming film? Can one detail really affect the quality of a film? I say yes. It is the difference between a good...

Who can you trust?

by   WBDBaj ,  Aug 4, 2002
Pros: Hitchcock suspense at its early finest. Cary Grant is wonderful, so is Joan
Cons: SSSSSSSSSLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW
The Bottom Line: Hitchcock through and through, but very slow-moving. Grant and Fontayn wonderful.
Review: My husband rents Hitchcock's when there is nothing else to rent. He doesn't read suspense novels, but I may make him some day. Suspicion is one he hadn't seen.

We started and stopped it three times - it was so slow. No one was dying. The...

Sad Ending, for a Master

by   pambo ,  Dec 30, 2007
Pros: Good, taut, psychological thriller....
Cons: ...til the end.
The Bottom Line: Great for Cary Grant fans. Otherwise, just okay.
Review: "Suspicion" is a movie with a fine director, excellent cast, wonderful settings, a story heading in the right direction and a bum ending. Ah, what might have been. Joan Fontaine plays Lina McLaidlaw, a painfully shy woman who falls for someone who ...

Suspicion Holds Few Surprises

by   lskrzyniarz ,  Jul 14, 2000
Pros: Cary Grant.
Cons: Contrived plot.
Review: Being a big fan of Hitchcock, I've seen most of his more popular films. SUSPICION isn't one of my all-time favorites. I'll watch it if it happens to be on and there's nothing else interesting on the tube, but it's not one to rush out and see. It...

Ooh, scary...An Illuminated Glass of Milk!

by   truckturner ,  Jul 9, 2003
Pros: Last fifteen minutes OK, Nigel Bruce
Cons: Exceedingly dull, Fontaine surprisingly bland, 'monkey face'.
The Bottom Line: Not as bad as the Paradine Case, but a lackluster suspense effort with no thrills at all, and filled with truly annoying people.
Review: Suave gambler and philanderer Cary Grant marries wealthy Joan Fontaine and may actually be trying to ...
