I go through quit a bit of rice, sure you can use a pan with a heavy fitting lid and have perfect rice, but thats not always ideal. Why would you want another gadget or appliance to clutter your counter? My reason is it is nice to set it and forget it, I can wash my rice throw it in the cooker with water close the lid and do other things and not have to worry about it. I can go out for my walk come back and have perfect rice, or I can worry about other parts of the meal well the rice cooks its self.
Use and Performance: So you say you cant make rice, you burn it all the time, or it comes out hard and crispy? Well then its time to look into a proper rice cooker such as this Sunpentown, with its pressure sealing lid.
For perfect rice start out with your favorite rice, preferably some nice Jasmine or Basmati long grin rice, or if you want sticky sushi like rice look for a short grain rice such as the Japanese Rose brand rice. try to stay away from Uncle bens and other par boiled and overly processed rice.
Measure out how much rice you want with the included measuring cup (remember rice doubles as it cooks, so if you want ½ cup cooked rice measure out a ¼ cup) pour into a bowl and rinse the rice at least 3 times till the water runs clear when you dump it off. It is advisable to use another bowl to rinse the rice instead of the included nonstick pan, as the abrasion from rinsing the rice with your fingers can damage the coating. Once rinsed add to the nonstick pan and fill water to the appropriate line in the pan, for each ¾ cup of the included measuring cup you will fill water to the 1 cup line in the pan. If you want sticker rice add a little more water, if you want firmer rice a little less water.
Place pan in the cooker, close the lid, and plug the unit it in, press the button down to cook. It is advisable once the unit cycles and pops up to warm mode, to let the rice sit at least 15 minutes to finish steaming.
Conclusion: I think for the money this is a great rice cooker, my only complaints are the lid is screwed on and can not be taken off to clean. The warming feature seems to be a bit hot and will dry out and possible burn the rice after only an hour of sitting after the cook cycle. Aside from those 2 gripes, I would of preferred to have a removable cord, for easier storage.
