2006 WRX TR Review

The TR differs from the standard WRX with a 4 speaker 80 watt sound system with manual AC replacing the automatic climate control and 6 speaker 140 watt sound system, regular front seats, no momo steering wheel, and no spoiler. The TR is perfect for those who will mod there car or just want to save a grand. Everything else that matters is still present. The 2.5L engine has decent power, but once past 3000 rpm the turbo works its magic. It's not blurring quick, but it has enough power for spirited driving. On the highway at 80mph in 5th it spins at 3000rpm providing excellent passing power without having to downshift, yet you can use 5th all the way down to 30mph with the improved low end. The suspension is comortable, but at the expense of some body roll when pushed hard. The gearbox has long throws, but that could be remedied with a shortshifter (subaru provides a factory option). Then there's the AWD. Floor it in 1st in heavy rain and it goes like it's dry. Do the same in a turn and the rear end kicks out a bit due to a bit more rear wheel bias. Side airbags are standard as well as 4 wheel disc brakes with 215/45 R17 M+S all-seasons. The controls are simple and easy which is something today with other car's button infested consoles. The cd player doesn't play MP3s which is strange considering that this is a youth oriented car. My plans for the car are to upgrade the sound system within the next few months, and after a few years, start modding it for more power.
