1999 Subaru L wagon review
Pros:
AWD, superior handling, decent gas mileage (30 hwy)
Cons:
Extremely uncomfortable seating. Brake and drive train issues after 70,000 miles
The Bottom Line:
Great, reliable car, but does not live up to the old Subaru's run forever with no problems mantra.

Great car for the city or to enjoy windy country roads, handles great in all weather conditions. This car loves snow! Not so great for highway or for extended trips over 1.5 hours due to the uncomfortable seats and harsh ride.
(I didn't buy this car for highway use but ended up having to take weekly 2 hr trips one way. If I had to make 3 hr trips I would either buy a new car or jump out the car window!)
I had absolutley no problems for 70,000 miles and only needed to change the oil and do basic maintenence, except having to deal with noisy brakes. Ceramic brake pads solved the problem.
After 70,000 miles is a different story. I now have 78,000 and have installed a new clutch, left and right front axles, and an entire brake system. (OK, I can let the brakes slide.)
1st gear is crunching unless I am easy on it, and I have a whur whur whur sound that is either coming from the transmission or the drive chain, no one knows for sure which one.
I expected to get to at least 100,000 miles before dealing with drive chain issues. I'm not that hard on a car.
