I live in a region that experiences snow in the winter and wanted a vehicle that could handle adverse winter driving conditions AND could give me reasonable gas mileage. The 1999 Subaru Impreza wagon that I purchased was the only car on the market that fit my needs.
Additionally, it is a great car for people who are adventurous and need room for skiis, canoes, kayaks, camping equipment and mountain bikes. There are several attachments that you can purchase from Subaru to use with the roof rack, and it also works well with the Thule racks that I use to carry skiis.
It has a 2.2 liter engine, but also is available with a 2.5 liter. The 2.2 provides adequate power in all situations, but if you prefer a sporty feel I know through a friend of mine that the 2.5 provides additional power.
I find the automatic transmission a bit slow when accelerating, but otherwise it is adequate.
The interior space would be small for a tall or heavy person. Anybody who is more than 6'2" or 250 lbs would probably want to consider the larger legacy model. But if you fit in this car, it provides a comfortable ride, and the standard cassette player in all Subarus is a welcome feature.
Overall, this is a great value. It provides superior traction control, terrific handling, and many standard creature comforts at a very reasonable price. It has had no repairs and continues to run smoothly. Anyone who is in love with their small SUV, but not in love with the gas mileage it gets should consider a test drive of this vehicle.
