Author's Review
I purchased my 98 Impreza hatch in January 2002, so I've had it for about 2 months now. In that time, I've travelled over 8,000kms in it. I've gone on weekends away, moved homes with it (twice in fact) and used it around town for grocery shopping, people pickups and gear hauling for my sports.
It's a quick, nimble vehicle, with plenty of pickup (even in the standard 2.0L injected engine). It's not obscenely large (in fact the width of the vehicle is less than a Honda Civic sedan), but still has ample room to transport gear for a weekend's snowboarding trip (thanks to the 60/40 split rear seats), or just enough gear for a beach outing! I've even thrown 12 volleyballs, a set of nets, poles and coaching equipment and still had enough room for extra equipment. Try that in a car of similar dimensions (1.40m x 4.40m)!
Mechanically I've had no problems with it at all. I'm running on 14" alloys, and these look good, although there are OLDER japanese model imports running around with WRX sports kits on and matching 16" mags. A lot of these cars are easily "hotted" up and the engines are reportedly easy to add turbos to.
