Author's Review
After many years of living with apartment provided refrigerators, we were renovating our kitchen and faced with the decision of appliances. The refrigerator was of little interest to me as I'd neve discerned any major differences among those I'd used. They kept food cold and didn't do a great job with frozen food, which always tasted compromised when you thawed it and ate it. But we determined this model would fit into our dimensions and allow us to use the stainless panels - necessary to complement our other stainless appliances, namely the Viking range and dishwasher.
There was a terrific shout of victory when we saw the refrigerator cleared the ceiling and it was installed, seemingly without problem. We put our food in and were pleased by the temperatures of the refrigerator and freezer. It made plenty of nicely shaped ice cubes, small enough to fit into drinks without overcrowding. The big surprise was the quality of the frozen food. Ice cream stays frozen and comes out as if it's just been bought. The same is true of everything else.
The refrigerator is spacious and shelves are adjustable, so storage is simple. The door holds plenty of things as well. It's easy to read and to change the temperature as numbers greet you on the top when you open the door.
We would have been delighted except that over the course of the first few years, we had repeated problems with the freezer, attributed to a water line. Repairs were prompt enough and professional, but afer a time, we'd once again find ice on the track of the freezer. Finally, Sub-Zero, who'd agreed to waive the repair charges and reimburse us for early ones, agreed to replace the unit.
About two years ago, we got the newer model and have had no problems since. They provided it without charge, which was terrific. This one is made slightly differently so there's a detector to monitor the ice maker (in the interior of the freezer) and we're 100% delighted with the Sub-Zero. Of our three, new major appliances, this is now my favorite and truly impacts on the taste of food. To clean the bottom of the freezer, one must remove the tray, which is a bit cumbersome when it's full, but it's not a major issue.
