Author's Review
I was looking for a tiny pocket size camera that was weather tight, had adequate picture quality, and had an easy to use, intuitive menu system. The Verve was one of the few cameras that had these features. The small size allows me to keep this camera in my pocket at all times for opportunistic photos. The seals that cause it to be weather tight from water, also keep dust and grit out as well, which is good for such a sensitive gadget that hangs out in my pocket. I found that the menu system is very easy to use and I can change settings quickly without fumbling for the manual. It's really easy to use. Picture quality is good for an everyday camera, but serious high quality work is best left to higher end cameras with big lenses. I read many reviews on this camera before I bought it, and the reviews proved pretty accurate. I find that full, daylight shots have very good to excellent picture quality, but dimming light conditions (without flash) cause the camera to use slower shutter speeds which cause many of my low light shots to be blurred because of camera shake. The "jaggies" mentioned in some of the reviews seem to crop up in some of my shots. A tripod is required for even moderately low light shots (without flash) to keep the images from blurring. I bought an extra battery and the big, 512 Meg card which gives huge capacity. I have yet to fill this 512 card and in retrospect, the 256 Meg card would have been adequate. The movie mode should not be considered high quality, but for a camera this size, it's good enough. If some action occurs out of the blue that I need to capture, I can "fast draw" the camera out of my pocket, turn the knob to video mode and start video capture quickly. The video is adequate, but it would be nice if this camera had 30 frames per second instead of the stock 15 fps. Downloading images to the PC is really simple. Battery life has not been an issue for me. All in all, this camera fits my needs quite well. For such a small camera, it has a rich feature set that is quite impressive and takes good quality photos overall. Now, if Olympus would make the video mode 30 frames per second, and give it a 3X zoom lens with more light gathering ability, this would be a bunch of performance in a tiny package that would be hard to beat.
