Stokke Sleepi - all that's left is to count the sheep!

The Stokke Sleepi is one of the nicest and most modern looking baby beds on the market today.

I bought this bed for the same reasons I buy most of my baby necessities (stroller, high chair etc) and that is to have the best quality, style and comfort with security that is available on the market today.

My review on the Stokke is a positive one addressing assembly, style/design, comfort, functionality, security, price & bedding (linen).

ASSEMBLY - I address this comment to mothers & fathers alike who may not be the most handy with a screwdriver, instructional manual and identical looking pieces of wood.... if you are anything like me - get someone to assemble this bed for you. I couldn't do as I lost my patience after about 40 minutes and pulled in my neighbour (as my husband is like me) and he assembled it and rolled it into our room all shiny and new within 30 minutes. My hero!

STYLE/DESIGN - the Stokke Sleepi is made of cultivated Birchwood and has a beautiful delicate shine to the wood. This is a sturdy baby bed and once assembled (again... the operative word is ONCE) you will have a beautiful piece of furniture that has a unique oval shape, a modern flat canopy attachment (which needs to be purchased separately) which in return holds a high quality veiled canopy suitable for boy or girl. The mattress is 100% hypo allergenic made from a ventilated foam and is press resistant so your baby's face does not sink into the mattress (this gave 'me' a little extra feeling of peace of mind).

COMFORT -The mattress however feels a little too hard and was great when my baby was 0-8 months (or so) but now he prefers the comfort of our bed and mattress (but this could be another story). I would say keep an eye open to see if this mattress is comfortable enough for a growing baby after 9 months or so. I am not convinced.

FUNCTIONALITY - As far as functionality goes there is not much more a baby bed can or should be used for apart from giving your baby a good sleep whenever their scheduled/non scheduled time comes a calling... but this bed DOES go the extra mile. It has 4 height adjustable positions perfect for the growing stages of your child and fantastic in terms of security (you adjust according to your child’s development). As your baby grows you can remove 1 of the panels which allows for your toddler to get in and out of the bed but still provides the security of not allowing your child to roll out of bed during their nap or night time sleep. But wait there’s more.... as your baby grows you can purchase a new addition to the base crib that you have and make it longer (no need to purchase another bed) and you still have all the features above)... but wait (no steak knives just yet).... the bed can also be transformed into 2 semi-circle very modern looking toddler chairs (now you get the steak knives ... just kidding)!

SECURITY - pretty much all has been said in terms of security in the functionally comments above. But I stress that the Stokke is a very secure feeling bed - it does not feel rickety in the slightest. The Stokke Sleepi has lockable wheels which keeps her in place. Easy to lock with a click of your shoe tip and unlocking this feature is the same - click et voila, you can roll it around with ease.

PRICE - The stokke is not cheap! In fact it will make you think more then twice before pulling out the old visa card or cheque book. Thoughts of what else you could buy if you just buy a bed 3 times less then the cost of this one will surely keep you awake at night.... but the Stokke Sleepi is worth every penny because it sits well in any room, it is guaranteed for 5 years in just about every country in the world (check this yourself however before purchasing as countries may vary), it is sturdy and it is a beautiful non conventional modern baby crib/bed that really can grow with your child.

BEDDING - like most accessories this is where you take in a sharp breath when you see the prices of linen. I bought a whole bunch of Stokke named linen when I ordered my bed and (this is true) my mother when cleaning out the baby room in preparation for the decoration of this room - threw out the bag full of brand new Stokke linen. A cool $400 opps!! Long story but the short of it was that I did not want to go and spend another $400, and I couldn't fire my mother so I went out and bought simple square fitted sheets (which do not fit snugly on the Stokke oval bed) but after my initial worry they work just as well as the 1 that was on the bed itself and not thrown away and I have a beautiful variety of colours that Stokke do not have in their limited collection and they cost a fraction of Stokke sheets. They do not come off or become wrinkled at all as the mattress is a great fit next to the bars keeping the sheets firmly in place.
