Product Review

"Star Wars" are my favorite movies ever

by   forrest_rice ,   Nov 1, 2003

Pros:  My favorite movies ever

Cons:  NONE AT ALL; maybe a few gripes about "Return of the Jedi"

The Bottom Line:  Who doesn't like Star Wars anyway?

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

Note- Star Wars has many editions, and even though the product of which I am reviewing is in the edition as is: Special Edition, I will speak of all the editions and differences.

Before I Start The Review- Note that the original trilogy is composed of episodes 4, 5, and 6. Now get back to the reading the rest of my review, you newbs.

Oh, and one last thing- My synopsis will movie at a breakneck pace, so brace yourselves. And, if you're not new to Star Wars, I advise you skip my synopsis and go straight to my reviews.

Synopsis For All Three Films:

Star Wars Episode 4: A New Hope- Princess Lea's (Carrie Fisher) ship is invaded by the evil Darth Vader (voiced by James Earl Jones) and a pack of Stormtroopers. All vital information to what is left of the Republic is transmitted into R2-D2, a droid (an Astro-droid if you must know). Aided with his pal C-3PO, the two droids journey on a quest to find Obi-Wan Kenobi. Things go wrong and they are captured by hooded little people called Jawas. They are then sold to a farmer named Owen Lars, and his nephew Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamil). Luke then learns of their mission to get to Obi-Wan, and then learns that Obi-Wan is actually an old hermit named Ben Kenobi. Obi-Wan teaches Luke of the force, an invisible energy field that is made up of all living things, and gives a Jedi his power. What is a Jedi? They were once rulers of peace and justice in the old Republic. For more info, see the new (or old, or you know) Star Wars movies, episodes 1 and 2. Back to the story. Luke then finds out his Aunt and Uncle are dead, so he decides to train with Obi Wan to be a Jedi. We then meet Han Solo (Harrison Ford in his first major role ever), and his crewmate Chewbacca (or Chewy, if your a geekazoid SW fanatic). Han Solo agrees to take them to Alderran (the planet of which Obi-Wan is trying to get to). But, turns out Alderran had been blown up, so too bad. They then wind up inside a super Imeperial Battle Stattion... OH WHO AM I KIDDING!? Everyone knows the story of Star Wars, everyone has seen them, so why waste my time trying to give detailed Synopsis of each film? Pass.

Review- It was just getting so tedious trying to write synopsis of the movies. It is just a huge story on a grand scale, and to summarize anything of it would be a near impossible feat, so anyway, on with the review.

Star Wars: Episode 4- A New Hope

I love Star Wars. I love all three of the original trilogy, yes, even Return of the Jedi. The first movie, Star Wars: A New Hope is my second favorite. It's this opera styled film, and it works perfectly. George Lucas took one huge risk. To start the Star Wars trilogy in the middle of his story! All this money, time, and effort into a sequel that doesn't have a prequel. Truly a big risk, but I think we can all agree it worked out for the best. I first saw Sat Wars: A New Hope when I was very, very young. I was probably four or five. I had it on VHS, one straight from the original VHS release in fact. I loved it. It was weird, I didn't understand a damn thing, but I loved it. It had this dated, but new feel to it. It was something that I never had experienced before. I was not a big fan then, and I wouldn't be until my second grade. In my second grade years, I had a friend that was a big Star Wars fan. So I watched all three movies, and from then on I was a fan. I soon owned every action figure in stock, and played with them all until they'd be at their breaking point.

Star Wars isn't science fiction, its more of a myth, a fairy tale, a legend. The first movie was basically a space opera, on a grand scale, with minimal resource. It still turned out for the best. All the Star Wars movies have this industrialized, dark feel to them. Much different than the happy-Go-Lucky feel of the new ones (Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones). Not meant as a slam against the newer movies, but the first Star Wars movie had a unique charm to it, a bit of nostalgia that pops up every time you watch it. It is a great, great film. Darth Vader is the best cinematic antagonist ever.

Overall Grade- A+

Star Wars: Episode 5- The Empire Strikes Back

The next film in the series, is my favorite: Star Wars Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back. Strangely enough, this was always my least favorite in the trilogy as a kid, and it then gradually became my favorite as I matured. The first movie was a great action/adventure film, with quite a bit of sustained drama, but it was also a lot of dopey fun, but this one was actually quite depressing. This is the darkest of the series, and also the most serious. This one is less fun than the others, but it is actually the better movie. First, the sights seen in the movie are astounding. Some of the special effects rival that in Attack of the Clones. The best thing about Empire is it is basically one big character development scheme, That is what the movie is. The first one stated the premise, told you everything you need to know about the Star Wars universe. That was the setup, Empire is the execution. First, this is the episode where we learn that Darth Vader is Luke's father. If you did not know that Darth Vader is Luke's father, I'm sorry. If you have avoided this film since the 80's, avoided all immitations of Darth Vader, all the millions of parodies of the scene, or the talking Darth Vader action figures, I'm sorry if I ruined it for you: Darth Vader is Luke's father. Sorry. Anyway, whenever I see this film, and Darth Vader says: "No, I am your father." This little shiver goes up my spine. I have no idea why, but it does. Essentially, this film expresses character development for all the characters. As well as it introduces my all-time favorite character in the SW franchise, Yoda. Yoda is a great character, I love how he says his dialogue all weird. This movie is great, it is. For I give it an A+ , I must.

Overall Grade- A+

Star Wars: Episode 6- Return of the Jedi
(advertised as Revenge of the Jedi)

Just when you thought the Star Wars trilogy was going to turn into this depressing, dark story, the third movie comes out, and it's the lightest of them all. As a kid, Return of the Jedi was my favorite, and now it is my least favorite of the original trilogy. First off, many people will say the movie sucked because of the Ewoks. Yes, the Ewoks were entirely dopey, but for me, they didn't take to much from the film, and I think we can all agree they were better than the even more childish Gungans. The final showdown between Luke and Vader was very good, and it was a very appropriate end to the trilogy. Also, the final space battle between the Rebels and Empire was great. Though I wouldn't rank it as high at the space battle in A New Hope, however, I will say that the special effects were very, very impressive. Some looked better than the expensive CGI of the space battle in The Phantom Menace. There is something missing in this episode that the others had. I guess this one is a bit too cheesy, especially after the extremly dark Empire episode. Still, it's Star Warsy enough for me to give it an "A". In fact the only reason why I'm not going to give it an A+ is for the fact that the filmmakers decide to kill Bobba Fett, the coolest character of them all, without mercy, and in a very disappointing way. I mean, the most notorious bounty hunter of them all is killed by accident by a blind man. Shame, shame, shame.

Overall Grade- A

Other Stuff- The Star Wars movies were released in an all new "Special Edition" format. Which either ruined of improved the trilogy, depending on who you're talking to. Most die-hard Star Wars fans will tell you that George Lucas ruined the original trilogy with the "Special Edtions". However, I believe in some way, it was an improvement. However, the new scenes added in, were they needed? I mean, come on, why add onto the trilogy with new scenes that have special effects well ahead of the time of the older special effects? It just seems sort of unbalanced. It was nice to see the deleted scenes, and it was a good idea for the re-release. But, I believe what should be done to the original trilogy is simple: Make the print look nicer, sharpen the soundtrack, and sharpen the special effects. By sharpen, I don't mean make totally new digital effects, which is what they did, but take what there is of the effects and just make them look nicer, you know, get rid of the blue-screen, black outlined effect. Instead, Lucas decided to replace them with digital images. Not to mention ruin Return of the Jedi with a totally stupid dance number. Although it does not say it, the item I am reviewing is the "Special Edition". Yes, you heard right, if you want the original trilogy in its original format, do not buy this VHS set, it is actually the "Special Edition".

Jerry Springer's Final Thought- (Har, Har) Star Wars is great. A mix between science fiction, Japanese legends, opera, fantasy and mythology, and a great display of good vs. evil. It's a lot of fun, and has one of the most expandable stories ever. George Lucas' Star Wars trilogy will entertain you very much. But we all know that. Right?
