X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter is a decent step from TIE Fighter. The graphics, gameplay and multiplayer aspect are all stronger. However, the single player mode is not nearly as strong. Luckily, you can download levels for free off the Internet, so don't fear. Many people liked the previous Star Wars titles but would have liked them more if they could have played as both sides. This game gives you the chance.
Playing as either the Imperials or the Rebel Alliance, players undergo a series of missions ranging from Training missions to massive assaults on the other side. There is a great variety of missions, and as you progress in the game, you get promotions based on your record. There are many levels, and I have yet to get to the top. Unfortunately, you can only reach the upper levels through Multiplayer gameplay, which some people might think as a turn off. The visual effects and musical score are fantastic and do Star Wars credit.
The multiplayer aspect is very cool, I have yet to find anything more fun than blowing your friends up and proving that you are the best starfighter in the galaxy. Also, wingman and opponent intelligence has been raised, so they actually obey your commands. And no longer do your wingmen or opponents crash into walls (though they occasionally crash into you). And considering it came out before Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance, I don't think it's fair to judge this game by that one. This is a really great game and don't let anyone dissude you!
