Highly underrated film

My father fought at Stalingrad on a Soviet side and he couldn't stand watching war movies. but I watch a ton of them back in the USSR, as a kid trying to underdstand how it was like to be there. Out of all the war movies I have seen this movie was so realistic that it was even hard for me to watch, because it has a lot of the elements from the was stories my dad told me; "we very hungry, very cold, very scared and death was everywhere".
This is a very honest, thoughtful and well made film. And unlike Soviet war films doesn't show everyone as a hero ready to die for the Motherland, nor like vast majority of Hollywood war movies with mandatory happy end and fake plots and bland characters ("War is Hell" is an exception).
