Product Review

Spyro's debut on the GameCube

by   reviewerrob ,   Jan 31, 2008

Pros:  Graphics, gameplay

Cons:  Glitches, short

The Bottom Line:  It's a decent platformer, even though it's easy and short. The game is alright for kids and huge Spyro fans only.

Overall Rating: 3/5 stars

Author's Review

Spyro has been a game franchise since 1998, and was originally only for the PlayStation console. Since then, numerous Spyro games have came out. This is the first game in the series to be for several consoles.

Plot

The game begins with Spyro at a party for the baby dragons. They are about to recieve their dragonfly helpers, until Ripto arrives. Ripto casts a spell to get rid of all the dragonflies, however it doesn't work correctly. All the dragonflies are scattered across several worlds.

The plot is a bit bland and not very interesting.

Gameplay

Spyro is a dragon that can fly, jump and attack enemies with various breath attacks. In previous games, he only had fire breath. In this game, he gets ice, bubble and electric breaths. This is a nice addition, however it still doesn't much to the game overall. You also have a sidekick Sparx, which is a dragonfly that helps you in the game. He will grab nearby items for you.

Your overall goal is to collect all the dragonflies and then defeat Ripto. Dragonflies are found in each level, and are usually easy to get. Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly is your basic platform game: jumping, collecting and defeating enemies is just about all you do in the game. There is a few sidequests such as racing levels, but overall it's nothing new to the genre.

The game isn't too difficult overall. The levels where you need to slide down a hill are probably the most difficult thing in the game. Also, the controls for the game are easy to learn and not a problem at all.

Enjoying the game is hard to do with all the glitches in it. It seems like they just rushed the game and did zero to little testing. Swimming in the air (after getting out of water), random voice clips from previous levels playing at the wrong time and floors turning invisible are just some of the glitches. If you can manage to ignore the many glitches, the gameplay is simple and enjoyable though.

Graphics and sound

The graphics are full of color and work well with the game. However, the frame rate of the game is horrible. In big open areas, the game moves very slowly. During cutscenes, the game moves slowly as well.

As for sound, it's alright but nothing that great. Spyro talks for a lot of the game, as does his dragonfly Sparx. Both voices are a bit annoying, with Sparx being the worse. You can hardly understand him, and it's just too squeaky. The various object smash noises and so on, get repetitive.

Replay value

This game doesn't have much replay value. Besides the main story mode, there is a few optional things such as collecting the gems. There is also some cheat codes that add to the game a little. Once you beat the game, it's very likely you wont be playing this again.
