Spidey in the black suit, Part 3

I am a big fan of Spider Man. I used to watch the cartoons when I was growing up. The Spiderman ride is my favorite one at Universal Studio's Islands of Adventure. I saw part 1 and part 2, so when Spiderman 3 came out, I felt obligated to see it. I knew it was going to be good because it was the continuation of part 2.

Once again, Toby MaGuire takes on the leading role as Peter Benjamin Parker. Peter is still riding around NYC on his bicycle. He is still living in that same apartment and having the same conflicts with his landlord. He is still in a love thing with Mary Jane (Kirsten Dunst) and still very close to his Aunt May (Rosemary Harris). He is still on the move again as Spiderman running to the rescue at every emergency and saving lives.

This story is more of a story about love, life, family, friendship, ego and revenge. As far as love, Peter and MJ are so in love that they do things like lay in spider webs in the sky. Peter tells his aunt of his plans to propose to Mary Jane. Aunt May is always supportive and sweet. When he tells her of his plans, she shares with him some of the most intimate details of the relationship she used to have with her now deceased husband. If he were still alive, they would have been married for 50 years.

Towards the end of Spiderman 2, Peter unearths truths about the night of Uncle Ben's passing away. In Spiderman 3 Flint Marko (Thomas Haden church) who had been incarcerated for the murder of Uncle Ben had escaped from prison to go and see his young daughter. He falls into the wrong place at the wrong time where at the time, Scientists were doing some kind of molecular testing that instantly disintegrates him. When he regenerates, he comes back as a man made out of sand, otherwise known as The sandman. This portion reminded me of The Mummy. The sandman is strong like Arnold Schwarzanegger.

Mary Jane Watson is still doing her thing on Broadway. She acts and dances. She begins to receive bad reviews of her performances. At the same time as her downfall, Peter is getting all the praise and honor for saving lives from the recent attack of the Sandman. The worst part is when MJ loses her job to Andrea Rubin. Not too much after that, she goes to the parade in front of City Hall where Peter is being honored and catches him letting one of his fans kiss him in the same way MJ kissed him in Spiderman 1, publicly just for raves from his fans. They have their issues. She is not too happy because he is not being supportive and he is all into himself now because everybody is feeling him.

Harry Osborne (James Franco) acquires his late father's flying board and engineers a powerful new Goblin outfit, and takes to the sky to avenge his father's death. He is taken to the dark side as Goblin Jr. There was a cool special effect when the iron claws came out of Harry's arms. Peter and Harry embrace in their first contact battle, gliding on the air skate board like a passenger on an American Airlines flight flying over Bermuda.

A weird black ooze is lurking in the air and attaches itself to Peter. It is a mysterious space sludge that infects Peter's Spider Man suit and turns it black. The new suit overpowers Peter's personality. The Peter Parker that MJ used to know and love becomes a different person. The black suit makes him mean and more free. He becomes less of a pushover and more of a person in control, even taking a stand against his landlord. Though I am not saying that the black suit was good for him, I thought it was about time that he put his foot down to that landlord who used to take rent money but do nothing to accommodate to his tenant.

Spidey becomes more of a lady's man. The new suit feeds on his evil thoughts and brings out the dark side of Spider-Man. He is made to be aggressive and conceited. His next goal is to avenge his uncle's death. His display of anger toward the Sandman seemed real and in place. When he sees how the black suit starts to make him not so stiff, he starts choosing to wear the black suit over the red.

When Peter starts to get a big head about being such a great superhero, he loses his job as a journalist. New journalist, Eddie Brock (Grace) is an ambitious street photographer who comes to take Peter's place covering Spiderman. He is very snobbish and obnoxious. But at the same time he is very determined and tries everything he could to get photos of Spiderman in time for the morning paper, even deliver fake images. When it is discovered that the pictures that he is bringing in are fakes, he loses his job and becomes very angry.

Spiderman begins to neglect MJ. MJ is not into the new Peter and turns to Harry when she starts feeling that Peter is being unsupportive. MJ and Harry embrace in a kiss. My thought on that was, just because you are having a conflict with your man doesn't mean you go running off to his best friend. But Harry and MJ had a fling in Spiderman 1 and also went to high school together , so they too were friends. Harry uses that kiss to his advantage though where he later kidnaps her and makes her break up with Peter. This really makes Peter look deep inside of himself and decide that he had to do what was right to win his girl's affection back. He tries to get the suit off and it almost seemed impossible because no matter what he did, it was somewhat glued to his body. When Peter finally gets the black suit off by force, it takes over Eddie and now Peter has more than just Goblin Jr and the Sandman to deal with.

First and foremost, I liked watching this movie and seeing familiar places like Times Square, Upper east side, City Hall and St. Patrick's Cathedral. I felt right at home seeing Spiderman suspended over the streets of my NYC. I also enjoyed seeing the jazzy dance scene where Peter was getting down and jiggy with it, though I thought that his aggressive attitude toward MJ was a little over the top. Director, Sam Raimi did a great job of allowing this movie to truly be a continuation of the 1st and 2nd installations of Spiderman and not lose any of it's edge. This movie was a little long running for approximately 140 minutes long. I liked the different effect with black suit showing Peter in a different light. Overall, I liked this movie and recommend it to all movie lovers.
