Did anyone get fired for this?

Oh how the mighty have fallen. Bitmap Brothers - what the hell were you thinking of? Let me guess, take the fantastic Amiga Speedball 2 (and the not-so-shabby Megadrive version); strip out all speed, charm and playability; add ugly, showy, slow-as-a-pensioner-driving graphics; add sound effects which you'd be ashamed to have on a digital watch; add hype which you cannot possibly live up to and - lo and behold - you don't! BB, you have delivered the sort of game in Speedball 2100 that if people saw being mugged, would join in.

You have basically tripped over, with your trousers around your ankles on a Saturday-afternoon high street in front of all the other game manufacturers. I feel embarrassed FOR you!
