Product Review

Some of the Best

by   downwithpep ,   Oct 4, 2002

Pros:  A wonderful character that you would love to hang out with

Cons:  Too much private references

The Bottom Line:  It is one of the best books for teens out there that takes into account Faulkner's Nobel acceptance speech.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

Melinda Sordino starts high school with the wrong clothes, the wrong attitude, and with no friends. Everybody hates her because she busted a high school party. She is the outcast. As she goes through the year, she self-imposes silence and eventually sees the error of her ways. She finally gets enough courage to speak out with good results.

This book was a breath of fresh air. When I read it, I felt as if Melinda were actually there, as if I felt her presence and I understood why she acted the way she acted. She is your loner quiet friend who everybody ignores but you know she is cool. All those other books out there on the market have rarely believable characters and plot.

It has all the marks of a classic book. It deals with a conflict of the heart and has the old varieties of truth. It is exiting because Melinda does not tell you what is going on, but gives you symbolism. Right in your face symbolism but still, it gives you clues so you can see deeper into her scars. It is part of a higher level mind.

This is a type of book that you do not turn your brain off. You have to leave it on or else you are lost in the enigma that is Melinda Sordino.

I love this book dearly and I reread it almost every opportunity I get. I even pick a place and start reading from there.

I am warning all the fainthearted and the closed-minded people stay away from this book. [I would personally urge you to read it so I could see your face not getting all the references she uses, and, of course, your bewilderment.] It is very sensitive subject matter in most schools and might be banned in more restrictive schools, but I urge you to read it.

It is the best out there for teens who are bored of classic "teen" situations.

[If you get all my references, I am so pleased with you.]

[update]
I will not rewrite this review because I think it illustrates the point of this book being a voyage of self-understanding.
Anderson puts in a whole segment on the symbolisms in her book while nicely putting in a little bit of character depth in to it.
Being the politically incorrect person that I am, I don't want to be blamed for parents buying this book for their nine-year-old child only to find out....
