To Speak or Not to Speak

Date of Review:  May 1, 2001
The Bottom Line: Whether or not you would want to relive high school, this book will take you back.
Review: Melinda Sordino is starting high school, but it's not the happy, exciting event that it's supposed to be. Instead of being with the group of friends she had in eighth grade, Melinda finds herself alone and friendless in the auditorium for freshman...

Why remain silent when you should Speak?

Date of Review:  Jan 12, 2006
The Bottom Line: Speak is an important novel about rape. Although it's targeted to a young adult audience, people of all ages should read the book.
Review: Laurie Halse Anderson's first novel portrays the Darwinian-Like society that high-schoolers consciously or sub-consciously always seem to create. The main character, Melinda, is an abomination amongst her peers and loathes school and all of it's...

Dying Trees, Silence, and Secrets

Date of Review:  Jul 24, 2001
The Bottom Line: Despite its flaws, Speak is worth reading for its compelling narrator and its attempts to deal with a crime faced by all too many teenage girls.
Review: Please Note: In order to adequately review this book, I?ve had to include a few spoilers.

Thirteen year old Melinda Sordino is starting high school as a social pariah. The summer before her freshman year, she called the police at a party...

You have to Speak

Date of Review:  Aug 11, 2006
The Bottom Line: Read it, for your daughters sake.
Review: Sometimes when things are going bad, you just want to curl up in a ball and forget about the rest of the world. Sometimes things go so bad that you can't even find your voice any more. That is what Melinda Sordino is going through.

This book spoke to me

Date of Review:  Jul 19, 2004
The Bottom Line: A great book, in short. Speak is very inspiring but easy to read.
Review: I don't remember how I stumbled across Speak, but I did, and I'm very glad of it. I think I may have first become interested in it because the author's (Laurie Halse Anderson's) name is very similar to mine (Laura Anderson). Now that you know that...

Speak~~Banishing the Prison of Silence

Date of Review:  Oct 2, 2002
The Bottom Line: The education in rape survivors is worth the sad storyline.
Review: I can clearly remember my sophomore year in high school being one of indecision and a yearning to be accepted by the group. Many students worry about these things especially in this grade and since my niece will be entering high school in the next...

IT

Date of Review:  Jul 25, 2002
The Bottom Line: Speak is truly an original work that you can read again and again and still be able to find new meaning.
Review: Simply put, this is the greatest book that I have ever read. It delves into the psych of a 15-16 year old girl who is just entering high school. She is faced with a difficult situation at a party that she did not know how to handle which sparks the...

Some of the Best

Date of Review:  Oct 4, 2002
The Bottom Line: It is one of the best books for teens out there that takes into account Faulkner's Nobel acceptance speech.
Review: Melinda Sordino starts high school with the wrong clothes, the wrong attitude, and with no friends. Everybody hates her because she busted a high school party. She is the outcast. As she goes through the year, she self-imposes silence and eventually...

Parents, Please Read It; Don't Ban It

Date of Review:  Sep 29, 2009
The Bottom Line: Pardon the pun, the story speaks to high school students - girls, at least - and there's truly nothing in the text a reasonable parent could object to.
Review: Speak was first published in 1999. And it's still quite relevant, to teenagers and their parents.

Because the kids who were three or four when the book came out are now teenagers, there are parents of teenagers just figuring out...

Speak your mind.

Date of Review:  Oct 23, 2002
The Bottom Line: Speak is a good book, and you should read it at least once.
Review: Imagine going into high school with no friends, no support, and no hope. Melinda feels this way; last summer she broke up a drinking party.
Speak is about an outcast girl with a secret-she was raped last summer at a party. Frightened, she had...
