Product Review

Reality kicks in that I have no rhythm...

by   AriesG ,   Jul 12, 2000

Pros:  Great graphics, smooth animation, responsive

Cons:  Medium learning curve, may be redundant, need to have some form of rhythm

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

With so many games on the market that provide pretty much the same ol' routine of button mashing or in-your-face action, who knew something as simple as dancing could provide me with hours of entertainment.

Space Channel 5 is definitely unique. No heavy arsenal to get you through each scenario, you will have to rely on your ability to move to the beat. Its all about timing. Of course, if you can count beats and push buttons at the same time, you've got an edge.

You play as Ulala - SC5's ever popular newscaster. You will encounter Morolians - sort of reminds me of slugs...with legs. They've infiltrated the space port and kidnapped the locals and the only way you're ever going to save them is to dance.

The graphics in this game are great. Very smooth animation with lifelike movements. Definitely eye-candy. The music is catchy and fun. I would rate the learning curve about a medium. It takes more than a few tries to get the hang of the timing and with the Morolians wanting to speed things up every so often, you really need to make sure your fingers are nimble.

One major drawback is the voices. Ulala has this terrible habit of wanting to say something prior to each phase of interaction and often it obscures what the Morolians are saying. Eventually you'll get the hang of paying attention to visual cues and body direction.

This game may get old quickly if you don't advance in a spritely manner but if anything, you'll get a kick out of the imagery and you'll be humming a few tunes of your own.
