Underpowered, Slow On Vista Business
Date of Review: Mar 3, 2009
The Bottom Line: Skip this model if its still being sold (new or used). You're better off with later models.
This machine, though easy on the eyes, and extremely lightweight and portable, isn't recommended with base configuration running Vista, specifically Vista Business in our case.
You should customize this with the maximum allowable memory that this model can handle. With 1 Gig of RAM and a slow disk (4200 rpm), you'll hardly be able to do anything from a cold boot until after about 5 to 10 minutes (re: boot process). So given the weakness of some components, you're better off maxing out others that you can.
Perfomance does improve after all boot processes are completed. IT should remove as much startup programs as possible to improve performance.
This includes careful choice in security programs - re: scanning means disk access so with a slow disk, scheduling scans to after work is a must. As much as this sounds obvious, if the laptop is shutdown during this schedule, the scan process will occur on next boot up (which would be work hours). Obviously this depends on scan parameters but good IT practice dictates to run this process if/when interrupted or lapsed a scheduled scan.
Touchpad exhibits lag and/or unresponsiveness at times - although this could very well be attributed to performance issues.
Screen is crisp/clear. It has enough ports for expansion and/or external components for a laptop of this size.
