Product Review

This is the perfect unit for the casual user

by   eddielakr ,   Mar 31, 2007

Pros:  Beautiful Screen, Well Built, built in mic +webcam, user friendly

Cons:  horrible Video + 3d, no bluetooth, audio is subpar

The Bottom Line:  The is a great laptop if you are surfing the net, using it for school, or business. It's not for multimedia or anything graphics intensive

Overall Rating: 3/5 stars

Author's Review

I just purchased this laptop at staples on clearance for $805 after tax, which is a steal for an FE laptop, but in the end I ended up returning it for a newer model.

This laptop is packed with features. It's an FE model, which is better than the basic N 15" sony laptop. It is more robust and comes with the option of getting a 3d card and it has a built in webcam and a 3rd usb port, as a opposed to the N's 2 usb ports.

Mine was a dual core 2 1.8, 1gig ram, 120gig hardrive, 15.4 eco screen, webcam, wireless, intel 950graphics, etc.

The problem I have with this unit is not the hardrive, memory, or the processor. It's the video card. The FE-770 comes with the Windows XP media center software which was mean't for multimedia-video-3d-graphics-etc.
The sad part is the 950 intel graphics processor is absolutely garbage. Not only does it steal memory from the main memory, but it also is incredibly slow. Fortunately, if you build your computer up with sony, you can pick a 3d card. In this instance, the fe770 has this card stock.

I returned this unit for the FE-890 (basically the same computer, I just picked the upgraded screen and 3d card).
I had 3 laptops to run benchmarks on. A compaq (2 year old amd-very basic 3d card, 768ram) and FE-890 with nvidia7600, and a FE770 with intel 950.
I ran the 3d mark on all three computers. The compaq scored a measily 450. The fe-890 upgraded attained a 3100. The FE770 got a measily 515!!!!!!!!

So for 3d games and 3d multimedia applications it's basically worthless. The good news is the processor and rest of the unit is very quick. So if you are using this soley for school and business, this is probably the perfect laptop for you. Then again, why would you buy a business laptop with a multimedia copy of windows? You would buy it with windows professional.

The good news is the screen is absolutely beautiful and very bright. The keys are put together nicely and the scroll feels right at home. The dvd burner and cdr are quick and make cds instantly. The software is robust, with video editing and music editing applications. Though the video editing software is quite nice, the unit kept crashing when I tried to copy over video with my camera on firewire...
The FE-890 did it like a charm with the same specs, but yet has a different video card.

The battery is decent and a user can get anywhere from 2-3.5hours depending on what they are doing and how bright they make the screen. You cannot buy this model new anymore, only on closeout or refurbished. Also, the price difference between this and the newer fe is so minimal, that it's not worth saving $100-200 for getting an older model.

I cannot knock this laptop for what it is. It's solid, has an amazing screen, wonderful keys and keypad, user friendly, amazing build, webcam, built in mic, etc. If you are a gamer or looking to do anything grapics intensive, look elsewhere.
