Author's Review
We purchased this DVD player to replace one that died on us a year and a half ago. We don't have TV service (cable, satellite, etc), so we LIVE on Netflix and a nice library of our favorite DVDs. This player hasn't skipped a beat!
I have some quirky complaints, but when it comes down to it, I don't think I'd trade this unit in for anything else. You can get cheap DVD players at Walmart for half the price, but it's hard to beat the reliability and peace of mind you get from buying a SONY brand electronics item. You could also buy a DVD player for double the price, but since we have a standard (not HD) 24" TV, the extra resolution and functionality would be a waste of money for us.
My only complaint is that it takes a while for the player to turn on/off and to open and close.
And it doesn't work 100% with our universal remote, but that may be an issue with the remote (an older remote) rather than anything else. It works well, but it doesn't scan -- you can only go a whole chapter forward and backward at a time.
I do wish there were more functionality on the unit itself. If I lose the remote (or my toddler hides it in the couch), I can use the buttons on the unit, but the functionality is limited -- play, stop, forward a chapter but no scanning.
This DVD player has seen a LOT of use (5 nights a week for 2-3 hours each night, for 18 months) and has been very reliable the entire time. If I were to go out and buy another DVD player (say, as a present or for another room), I would buy the exact same model again.
