Sony offers reliable computer CD/DVD burners
Date of Review: Feb 10, 2008
The Bottom Line: I always use Sony drives with no problems at all.
I have used and owned a few Sony CD and DVD drives like the DRU-710, DRU-720, DRU-810, and now this DRU-840. I have never uttered a complaint about these drives. The only problem i had was when the drawer was in the open position, and my knee smashed it sideways, knocking it off it's track, and i 'pushed' it in with some force and it went back in. I read negative reviews of Sony burners and i have to laugh. I have burned thousands of CD's, all live music that is legally traded, not bootleg stuff, and hundreds of DVD's with Sony drives and I never had a drive go out on me. I do spend a little more for quality media, even some Sony blanks gave me problems. Now for the specs: 20X DVD+R, 12X DVD+RW, 12X DVD+R, 20X DVD-R, 6X DVD-RW, 12X DVD-RAM, 16X DVD-ROM, 48X CD-R, 32X CD-RW, 48X CD-ROM; 2MB Cache, P-ATA, and bundled with Nero OEM version.
Now with that out of the way, the Nero burning program with it has a dvd software player that times out after 30 days of use and they want you to buy a Dolby Digital decoder or buy a full retail version of Nero. Install of the drive was standard, slides right in, i wish Sony would make a nice affordable SATA drive to raise the speeds up a a bit. But i often find myself burning at lower than max speeds, i cannot stand the digital glitch while watching a burned movie, usually always happens during the final ten minutes of the show. then i have to keep using the rewind, ff buttons to skip over the bad errors on the disc. Nero has some nice overburn protection, but i usually leave the pc alone while writing anyways. SONY does skimp on the included accessories and cables, there are none!!! This drive even did away with the interchangeable black and white face plates that the older models came with standard. Remember when drives came with a blank disc to play with and test?? Those were the good old days of 2x burning and three hundred dollar drives. Glad they are over.
