Excellent for Bootleggers

Date of Review: Apr 6, 2004

The Bottom Line:  I highly recommend the Sony ECMMS907. It faithfully records live sounds with minimal distortions and has useful settings. It's a great deal for the price.
I've been using this mic for a year now in a few different applications.

I mainly use it with a Sony MZR37 MiniDisc recorder. I record band rehearsals in a small room and it does an excellent job of capturing the huge range of instrument sounds, maintaining the integrity of bass, guitar, drums, and vocals.

I've used it to record live shows and it does a great job there, too. It takes a lot to distort this thing!

The two settings on the mic are very useful, with the wider setting really capturing sounds on the periphery.

Like most mics, this one picks up handling noise which is significantly reduced with the included holder.

The threading on the holder is odd--I can't find a mic stand or fishpole that it fits.

One battery lasts at least 10 hours of constant use, though I haven't tested it rigorously.

I don't like the decision to use gold for the plug. Sure, it might sound a teenie bit better, but gold is soft and wears away over time and should only be used for things that will remain plugged in. Some may disagree, but I feel strongly about this position.

For the price (I paid $70), this mic is an excellent value. I doubt you'll find a better mini-plug mic in this price range.
