If you are unsatisfied with the tinny sound of your laptop speakers, you can hook up to some external speakers, but then you are tethered to s pair of extra speakers with the attendant extra wires and power supplies or batteries.

Sony has come up with a clever idea. Two small speakers are attached to each other by a telescoping rod, and they are powered and driven by the USB cord. You don't need batteries, since they get the power from the USB, and you only need a single cord. The whole thing collapses into a small, convenient package, that is easy to carry on a trip across the country or across the living room.

The sound is not hi-fi by any means, because these are still very small speakers, but it is definitely a step up from the usual laptop speakers.
