Ah
the Sony Playstation, the system where I really started to take games seriously. I think this is probably the best all around system that has ever came out on the market. Yes my favorite genre is RPGs, and yes the Playstation has a load of them. The SNES is the only system that even comes close to having as many good games. As for the N64? Well can you honestly tell me that it has more good games than Playstation? I really didnt think so. Next Dreamcast, while its a great system I really have not got as much playing time with it to say it is equal, but as far as RPGs go Dreamcast cant compete just yet. Here is a list of why I think the Playstation is the best system out so far. So this is just what I think of the system, short and sweet.
Games:
Well lets see here, over 1000 games in its library if you include the games that were released in Japan, and nearly 700 American games released. Not only that, but plenty of the game are great so their not just a bunch of rushed out games that are horrible. Lots of great developers made games for it so there is a lot of variety of game styles. Speaking of variety, Playstation also has a lot of great games in each genre. Here is a few games that I enjoyed and I think helped Playstation get where it is today.
The Final Fantasy Series
Tobal 1
Wild Arms Series
Crash Bandicoot Series
Croc
Spyro The Dragon Series
The Legend of Dragoon
Tony Hawks Pro Skater Series
The Breath of Fire Series
Dino Crisis Series
Twisted Metal Series
Legend of Legaia
Vagrant Story
Medal of Honor Series
Game-day Football Series
Madden Football Series
NBA Live Series
Ogre Battle Series
Civilazation II
XenoGears (they need to hurry up and make another of these.)
Lunar Series
NCAA Game-Breaker Series
Resident Evil Series
And the ones I just listed are off the top of my head, there are lots more I forgot. Also notice that a lot of them are part of a series so you know they sold pretty well.
Under Dog:
Hey wait a minute, Nintendos system is twice as powerful, why isnt it on top? This is one thing that I respect Sony for. Not only did they come out on top of a system twice as powerful, but they proved that a systems specs dont matter in the end. Make good games and the public will come. Even now it pains me to admit but the system is still doing so well that it is beating out the PS2 and Dreamcast. Why is this strange? Well the PS2 and Dreamcast are 128 bits, compared to Playstations 32. Not only that but after this month the games coming out for it are going to slim. So Sony is still sitting on a gold mine while releasing a new system!
One thing I dont like about the Playstation is that it is supported almost solely by third party developers, so is the PS2. So if the support ever dwindles then the Playstation is gone. One more gripe isnt really a flaw of the system but a success. They hog a lot of really good developers!! While Sega and Nintendo may get a few of the game-developers games, but in the end most stick with Playstation and stop developing for other consoles.
As for the capabilitys for the system they were great. There was really not an exact way to develop for it, so each time a company got better at making games the gamer got the benefits. This helped the life of the system because the graphics continued to amaze people. Also lots of casual gamers flocked to the Playstation when gaming became more popular because it seemed to be popular. So why is it doing so good still? Well, when you sell over 70 million units people tend to buy games for the system they bought. Also the games were much cheaper than the N64s when it was released and still boast really cheap prices now. As for now though the system is at the point were it cant improve on what they have right now.
So should you buy a Playstation because of its great library of games? The great prices or the sleek design (well sort of)? Or are you going to buy it because of its great RPGs? No, dont buy it. You should have bought it five years ago, get with it man!! Just joking if you dont mind buying an almost dead system thats still very popular then go right ahead. Just dont expect me to help you find those hard to find games. Also if you want a smaller version of the system you can buy a PSOne, it is the size of a DVD case and should soon be totally portable because they are going to make a small screen so you can play it on the go.
