The "Apple" of the consoles
Pros:
Robust, well built unit. Well configured right out of the box.
Cons:
All the power comes at a cost. Expensive vs competition.

So why did I choose the Sony Playstation 3?
Although the most expensive, it offered by far the best value. Wii doesn't offer HD graphics. I have a large HD plasma screen and couldn't bear the low-res graphics.
XBOX 360 - has had a spate of hardware failures recently (microsoft has stepped up to the plate with a warranty extension to cover this though). If you configure an XBOX with the same bits and pieces as a PS3 (add a HD-DVD player, wireless network card), the cost is pretty much the same.
So for me, the PS3 gave me
- A standalone DVD upconverting player, plus Blu-ray player (if I ever care about the next-gen discs).
- An easy way to stream all my home movies, all my digital camera pictures and music from my Home PC to my home theatre. This replaces a media extender box and is a great way for the family to look at old movies & picts.
- A good balance of games for my family. There are enough hard core war games and racing games for my wife and I, as well as enough games for the under 10 crowd. To be honest, there could be 200 or 2000 games available, I will only ever play a fraction of them. I am satisfied with what is available right now.
- The XMB (This is the initial user interface that comes on-screen. You use this to select games, music, pictures and video). It has a very nice styling to it and demonstrates a lot of thought to design and detail.
Overall, the Sony Playstation 3 reminds me a lot of Apple products. Apples' goods are noted for their high marks in design, as well as the high price, but remain coveted none
the less.
Sony has made an amazing product, and I feel it was well worth the purchase price.
