Product Review

Simply the best

by   Thorin ,   May 13, 2007

Pros:  Beautiful 1080p crisp picture, great viewing angles, great price.

Cons:  no PIP, slow warm up time.

The Bottom Line:  If the warm up time doesn't concern you, it's worth the wait. The picture is absolutely beautiful and sharp. You won't regret it. I don't.

Author's Review

If you look at one of my earlier reviews, you will notice that I had a Samsung 50" DLP TV in my arsenal. Well I moved to a new house and the TV doesn't fit the new entertainment center that was built. So I had to purchase a new TV to replace my main one. I knew I wanted something just as good as my Samsung and started to look.

The Sony KDS-55A2020 is really an updated version of the KDS-55A2000. All that's different is that it's all black instead of silver on the edge. Is that really an update? not really but it allows Sony to charge you extra for it I suppose. I got it under $2000 with shipping and tax so for me, that wasn't a bad price at all.

My assumption is that if you're reading a review, you've already done your homework and looked up the technology and specs. You're really here to find out what I think of the TV and not for me to tell you all the detailed specifications. It's fairly easy to look that up anywhere, particularly Sony's website.

I liked the picture quality of the SXRD screen. On HD content through my cable box, discovery tv or regular HD shows were clear, sharp and crisp. Regular shows comes thru my cable box at 1080i so it's not FULL HD. I love that term as I remember a few years ago, 1080i was FULL HD and now 1080p is FULL HD. Can't wait for 2160p.
I have a PS3 hooked up to the TV on 1080p and wow the picture quality is amazing. Is there really a differece between 1080p and 1080i? Technically yes. But to me, it's better, but I can't tell unless I'm really looking for it. The response time of 3ms creates no shadow or ghosting affect at all. The 10000:1 contrast ratio gives a great picture that is bright and certainly not lacking in color.

The TV has more than abundant inputs. 2 HDMI, RF, Component and so on. It has a built in QAM Tuner. That allows you to pick up digital channels that are unscrambled on your cable line. This is pretty good for those who want to use a HD antenna. I have mine going thru a digital cable box.

The TV is VERY light for the size, 83lbs. Pretty easy to carry if you have really wide arms, but recommend that you have a friend help. It's not very deep, 19" so it can pretty much fit anywhere.

I do have a few quirks that irks me about the TV. It doesn't have PIP. What TV doesn't have PIP? I guess Sony had to cut down on costs somewhere right? It doesn't have a CableCard slot. It would be easier for those that don't want to get a cable box as it may cost $10 a month and free for the cable card. For me, I wanted a HD DVR so it didn't matter as much. The warm up time takes a little while, and if you accidently shut it off and try to turn it back on. It has to "warm up" again. So there's some waiting game there.

So overall, I love this TV. I wished I could've gotten a 60" SXRD, but alas it won't fit into the entertainment center either. So go get yourself one, you won't be disappointed.
