Product Review

A great deal from Dell!!!

by   daddyo702 ,   May 1, 2009

Pros:  You get a lot of TV for the money.

Cons:  No 120Hz Motionflow for even better gaming and Pixar movies.

The Bottom Line:

Grew up having Sony TV's with our first 36" & 27" Trinitron's still going strong, I could only hope this one is right along the heritage.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

First and foremost, this is one handsome TV. I had the chance to use the KDL-46S4100, the KDL-46V5100 and now, in review, and will be the keeper, the V series from last year which is the KDL-46V4100. In comparison to the two, I could honestly say that having the 120Hz Motionflow processor would be the most notable difference on this Bravia trio. Any hype, price and whatever terminolgies from contrast ratios, dynamic contrast ratios to 60Hz vs 120Hz and now, even 240Hz are just another way of taking your hard earned money. Never understood the term "Opera Effect" with the 120 Hz Motionflow enhanced TV's till I get to take one home and play with every adjustments possible. I personally don't like it too much as it tends to make the screen content look so smooth making it look fake and animated. It has that "live recording look" often seen on live news coverage and such. Like looking out at a window which some people might or will enjoy having such clarity but less lifelike, for me anyways.

Then now I have the V series from last year which oddly enough, was only manufactured March of' '09 which is not even a month ago. It has a great display on Standard Definition sources and needless to say HD is just superb. Having the Bravia Engine 2 has its own benefits cleaning up noise but seemingly over effective to KISS. (Keeping It Short & Simple) as it was on the S4100. All of the preset settings from Vivid, Standard to Movie modes were too saturated with colors along with a slightly darker background.  As always the case, everyone has their own preferences.  It will take some time tweaking it to your liking.   I was a little worried at first after the intitial setup because of a dimmer screen. Dimmer meaning I have maxed out the backlight, brightness and contrast settings of the video adjustments but still a couple of shades too dark for my taste then finally realizing that the Light Sensor Technology on this TV(enery saving feature that automatically sense ambient light conditions) is On by default. Turning it Off made it all acceptable to my liking. This V4100 also has "ACE" (Advance Contrast Enhancer) which on my experience on the V5100, made dark scenes darker for what logical reason it maybe and the transition to bright scenes would make it very annoying but so far, I have watched the same movies (Underworld 1 & 2) on the very scenes and have not experienced it yet on this V4100. All the connections you can ask for as having 4 HDMI, 3 in the back and 1 on the side along with matching component video for endless connection possibilities. Each every input has its own seperate customizable controls so you can have it adjusted from just about any source. For example, my DVD Karaoke has a 480i output which has an obvious degraded picture quality as compared to a Sony HDMI's 1080i upconverting DVD player and then of course, there's the Blu-Ray which is just a natural 1080p of beyond belief. There is an information banner which will tell you what picture quality you have on the source currently on the screen. Makes you wonder that "Can it possibly get any clearer than this?" It even has this Auto Wide feature that works with my cable box from Cox that automatically scales your non HD sources to "Full" format which eliminates the black side bars.

The sound compared to the previous two is suprisingly fuller and louder on this set. It has a volume leveler along with a sound booster which I grade an A- holding its own. It does not compare to a fully dedicated surround system (which by the way the S Force Surround on this TV only makes the TV volume sound a bit weaker) but more than acceptable for everyday viewing. There is so much good stuff to say about this TV and hopefully a little bit of this info helps. This KDL46V4100 is just plain great and I highly recommend it.

Few gripes I could say is the time it takes for it to turn on.  Takes almost 10 seconds for a picture to appear.  Had the same experience with all 3 Bravia's except the V5100 would have the "Bravia" emblem on start up.  Heavier than the S series and the present V series. Higher electricity consumption as compared to specs on the other TV's. No 120Hz Motionflow that would be great for Pixar movies.(120 Hz didnt tickle my fancy really) Seemingly more complex menu layout but tends to get more intuitive after a while.

I still can't believe the deal I got from Dell being able to acquire this set for $999.00 plus a 4 year warranty for $149.00 with free shipping. Brand new, not refurbished. Thanks to Dell I can finally afford this awesome TV. Good luck getting yours ASAP!
