Our first Flat Panel...our last Sony product
Date of Review: Sep 12, 2006
The Bottom Line: thumbs down Based upon the ability(willingness) of the Sony Service organization & the near premium price Sony is a n0-go.
Went to Ultimate Electronics (UE) and after some nice salesmanship (we went on a Sunday afternoon so the place was empty) we settled on this TV. For 4 months we had a great experience.
Tried to turn on the unit a 6 weeks ago and nothing. Since we didn't buy the extended warranty UE would offer no real assistance and directed us to Sony authorized repair shops (I guess if you HAVE to have a Sony then you HAVE to buy an extended warranty...for your own sake).
Apparently, this occurs enough with this model that the tech knew what the problem was. He described it as needing a new "A-board". Well, the plot thickens...the "A-board" is back ordered so it would appear that this is a recurring problem with this unit. This from a 4 month old television that was introduced in 2005.
We called Sony since the repair shop thought it could only help expedite the matter & were basically told how sorry they were for our experience but we'll have to wait for the part to come in. And no, we (Sony) will do nothing more for you but get you the board for free.
Is it mere coincidence that Dell is having major problems with their laptop batteries that incorporate battery cell technology from Sony.
Fortunately for us all Sony IS NOT the "One and Only".
