Product Review

Very disappointed in this product

by   gothzilla ,   Jun 24, 2008

Pros:  Excellent at blocking bad things that try and get in your network.

Cons:  Over-designed and too complex. Support is lacking.

The Bottom Line:  If you just want protection this is a great device. If you want to customize the features and do more than just plug it in, I'd recommend something else.

Overall Rating: 3/5 stars

Author's Review

This device came recommended from a friend so I decided to try it. For the most part it works pretty well, but it's over-designed badly. Configuring the device is extremely complicated. While this gives you tons of control over exactly how to do things, it makes setting up basic things very difficult.

I'll start with the good stuff. The protection is fantastic. Our internal antivirus is very bored and hasn't seen a single problem since I installed this firewall. If you want something to keep your network safe, this is a great product. The Viewpoint software that you can get with it works great as well, and makes it easy to see what's going on inside the firewall. The reports come out clean and easy to read as well.

Unfortunately this isn't enough to make up for the con's for me. Support is not very good with this device. There is a problem with user authentication to control who can access the web. It forces you to leave a browser popup window on your desktop which then breaks other browser windows. The problem shows up mostly when you try and launch a website from a shortcut. Many times the browser window opens in a small locked window that you can't resize and has no menu or scroll bars. You have to close the window then relaunch the URL shortcut over and over to get a normal browser window.
I've been waiting for months for them to fix this problem with no luck.

The unit has built in content filtering also, but as opposed to the rest of the system it seems under-designed. Your options are very limited and you don't get much flexibility on how you use it. I wanted to block only a few specific URL's but to do that you have to turn blocking on for the entire system. I wanted to log the different categories and block specific URL's but this is not possible.

Last, because user authentication is broken I tried to set up MAC filtering. I couldn't find instructions on how to do it for the entire network, only instructions on the wireless portion. I contacted support and they told me how to set it up but it didn't work. I'm now waiting for a call back. I would think something as basic as MAC filtering should be easy, but it's a long complex process to set it up and get it working, and it's pretty bad when your support team doesn't even know how to do it.
