Product Review

Wow! A bad idea done poorly!

by   excaliburn ,   Oct 30, 2004

Pros:  Cute amp, nice carrying bag, cables can be used for other things.

Cons:  Sound sucks, assembly sucks, poor battery life.

Overall Rating: 1/5 stars

Whose idea was this? A close examination of these speakers shows that they are nothing more than a voice coil glued to a piece of corrugated plastic. As you can imagine, there's NO bass whatsoever and the mid-range is also very poor. (Guys, there's a reason that so many speakers are designed as cones. The center section near the coil tends to be better at producing high-frequencies, while the rest of the cone produces the mid-range. A flat sheet without any significant excursion does neither one well.)

The speakers are also clumsy. There are two speakers (each about the size of a CD jewel box,) an amplifier (about the size, but not the shape, of a pack of cigarettes,) and three separate cables. It takes a bit of effort to set these up. Plus, the speakers keep falling over if you bump the cords.

These cost about $20. Save up another $10 and buy the Panasonic RP-SPT70 travel speakers. They fold up into a nice, compact assembly. They have much better sound and they operate on four AA batteries (instead of the SI-5's AAAs,) so you get better battery life.
