Author's Review
The Dragon Ball Z games have yet to really have a truly awesome game yet in the series. Most of their games are so mediocre and just have the same gameplay in all the games in that particular series. Well Dragon Ball Z: Supersonic Warriors doesn't carry the name of Budokai, but I can't imagine why it doesn't, considering that series is a big hit. The Budokai series has a big problem, the fighting in the game is way to generic for the Ps2. It doesn't utilize the button combinations that are possible for the Playstation 2, meaning that the game could easily be done on a Game Boy Advance. Well guess what? They did do it on the Game Boy Advance, and it feels like the exact same game as the Playstation 2 versions.
In Supersonic Warriors you have the choice between 16 characters. Yeah, sixteen characters! On a Game Boy Advance game. Starts out good right? Well it gets better. Each of these 16 characters have their own story mode that is different that follows the Dragon Ball Z story line. They really worked on this game. The story line will be fun to play through if you are a fan of Dragon Ball Z for sure, but if you aren't a fan, you probably aren't going to want to even bother with reading the story, the cutscenes are pretty long.
Supersonic Warriors is a fighting game. A 1 on 1 battle game like Street Fighter. The A button does kicking attacks and the B button does punching combos. This is pretty much exactly like the Budokai games on the Ps2. There are quite a few combos in the game which is surprising for a GBA game. The action in the game is fast paced. Your guy will be flying in the air and you will have to rush at the other guy quickly, or block a fire ball that is coming your way. Overall, the game takes more skill than most portable fighting games. The fighting is a mix of hand to hand and at a distance combat. The distance combat is generally just throwing a fireball or something at the other character. This makes you have to think about where you go more than other portable fighting games, or fighting games on any systme period, because if you are at a distance he could still shoot a fireball at you. Each character has different special attacks like shooting a laser out of their eye or making a wave come and hit you, but besides that most of the players are exactly alike each other in what attacks they can do.
Sometimes in the story modes you will be playing a tag battle that is the same premise as Tekken Tag on the PS2. You have two fighters and you have to switch them up when one is getting low on health or just for the heck of it. These battles are generally longer but more fun.
Aside from a huge story mode, there are 5 other modes that add even more to an already huge game:
Z Battle Mode: This just puts you right into the action and you just fight it out with random opponents.
Challenge mode: Pick 3 guys to battle with and then they show you different groups of enemies that you have to battle, pick who you want to battle and then you will have a 3 on 3 tag battle.
Free Battle Mode: Self explanatory
Training mode: Gives you an opponent that doesn't move so you can practice on him.
Link VS Mode: Play against a friend
The graphics in the game are pretty well done. There aren't a lot of areas to play in, but there are a lot of characters that look exactly like they do in the tv show and their movements are fast and smooth and the animations of their attacks are great. Sometimes at a distance, they become really blocky though and you will see some jaggedness of their drawing, but when they are up close you will see them clearly.
The sound in the game is good. You hear the music that you would hear on the show and it sounds great. You can hear distinct instruments, generally guitars, but there really aren't that many songs in the game which is somewhat of a let down. You can also hear the voices of the characters during battle. They generally just grunt, and I couldn't tell you whether or not it is their true voices from the show, but it sounds fine. So maybe the sound isn't superb, but it's not bad.
So should you get this game? If you are a Dragonball Z fan definitely get it. There is so much gameplay in this and Dragonball Z fans will love being able to play through the story. If you aren't a Dragon Ball Z fan but are looking to get a good fighting game, I would say this or Tekken Advance would be your best bet.
