Author's Review

Queens of the stone age are a four piece consisting of Josh Homme(Kyuss), Nick Oliveri(Kyuss), Dave Grohl(Nirvana, Foo Fighters) and Mark Lanegan(Screaming Trees) on this album. I say that as the line-up is forever changing around the two founding members, Homme and Oliveri.

They have enlisted the formidable drumming talents of Dave Grohl for this outing which moved their already tried and tested strengths onto bigger and better things.

They sound like a band that really enjoy their own music and have an eye for detail that makes their tracks something to behold.

Songs For The Deaf.

You think I ain't worth a dollar, but I feel like a millionaire.

Track 1 runs in with the sound of a car radio announcing songs for the deaf. The underlying drum and guitar then kick into a screaming kick ssa song. This song rolls along with handclaps and shouting, but don't let that put you off. A brilliant song to drive to.

No one knows.

The first single off the album, and it's an absolute scorcher. Dave Grohls drumming is out of this world (On the limited CD-DVD you see Dave in full flight on this song in concert) A very catchy guitar riff makes it hard to resist (even my girlfriend likes this, and she's a Robbie fan)

First it giveth.

My favourite track on the whole album, this song comes in strong and then just carries on. Led in by another DJ it kicks off at a fantastic pace which never lets slip. Again Dave's drumming is relentless and Josh's vocals seem laid back with a catchy chorus. Waiting for them to release this as a single.

Song for the dead.

Rumbles around initially and then breaks into rockin' intro, then breaks into a slower bluesy track. Mark Lanegan sings in his usual gravelly voice with haunting backing vocals.

The sky is fallin'.

Backing vocal intro leading into heavy guitar riff. Stop start guitars with Josh's easy vocal style and a great chorus make this a favourite too.

Six shooter.

Another low track intro leading into shouting, screaming, drums, and guitars. This track is very short and sweet.

Hangin' tree.

Mark Lanegan sings again for this Screaming Trees type track. Racing guitars and opposing drum track really move you. Everthing comes together to make this superb.

Go with the flow.

Second single and another belter. Drums to die for, beautiful guitars, and Josh's vocals. Easy to see why this was picked as a single.

Gonna leave you.

A beautifully crafted song with all the stuff you love from the best rock tracks.

Do it again.

This one always reminds me of Gary Glitter for some reason. With the shouts of "hey!" at the end of each riff. Again Josh's vocals really fit this song.

God is on the radio.

Slower tempo, but with all the same turbulance of the other tracks. Mark Lanegan strolls through this and draws you into singing along with the chorus.

Another love song.

This is really reminisant of 70's rock. Fairly up tempo with great vocals and possibly a hammond organ thrown in for good measure.

Song for the deaf.

My second favourite track on this album begins moodily, and then kicks into a thumping track. The chorus will have you putting this song on repeat again and again. This isn't really single material, but well worth buying the album for.

Mosquito song.

Odd track for QoTSA to do but still beautiful. Acoustic guitars surroung Josh's subdued vocals, ending in a crushendo of orchestral instruments. This could almost be a track from a movie.

The lost art of keeping a secret.

Anybody who is into QoTSA will know this track from their Rated R album. It was a big success as a single with plenty of airplay on radio and MTV. This live version is extra special because of the inclusion of Dave Grohl on drums.

Everybody's gonna be happy.

Slightly off-beat compared to the rest of the album, but very good in it's own right. A joyful end to an amazingly well structured album.

Well, there we have it. All in all, this is one album that I cannot recommend enough. You should own this even if you think you might not like it. It is a classic album that I believe in years to come will be recognised as such.
