Author's Review
I love Sleeping Beauty. In my mind, this was the best Disney film ever made. The storyline is just so enchanting..and the music is lovely. "I know you..I walked with you once upon a dream.."
The story begins as Aurora is born to the King and Queen. A huge gala is held, but the evil Maleficent is not invited. She shows up anyway, only to cast an evil curse upon Aurora, saying that she will prick her finger on a spindle on her 16th birthday and die. One of the fairies, Merryweather casts another spell, saying that if that happens, Aurora would not die, but would simply sleep until she was awakened by a kiss from her true love.
To prevent this from happening at all, Aurora is taken to the countryside, and raised by the three fairies, Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather. Aurora is known as Briar Rose, and has no idea of her past, or the spells that have been cast. Briar Rose (Aurora) meets a man in the woods, he happens to be Prince Phillip, the man she is to marry. They fall in love, but go their separate ways because Aurora must return to her house. Aurora learns of her destiny, about how she is a princess. Unfortunately, Maleficent had been following her (as evil people often do in Disney movies) and manages to make her prophecy come true - causing Aurora to prick her finger on a spindle. The Prince must battle Maleficent as a huge, evil dragon -- and of course, wins. Then, he kisses Sleeping Beauty, and she awakens..they live happily ever after (of course.)
Yes, it's a predictable story line, but what do you expect from Disney movies anyhow? The animation was great for its time, and is still pretty today. The theme of good vs. evil is present here, with good winning out in the end. This is a great movie for kids, and should be added to the collection of Disney movies that you own..and if you don't have a Disney collection - start one today with Sleeping Beauty!
