Author's Review
The sixth season of The Simpsons was one of the funniest seasons of the hit FOX show, and really showcased some of the funniest moments that the show has had to offer. Not only that, but the show drew a lot of attention in its May season finale, when they left fans with a cliff-hanger that had people talking about the show all summer. That particular cliff-hanger involved one of the main characters (Mr. Burns) having the town of Springfield (where the Simpsons live) turn against him. Many moments were taken to show different characters getting upset with Mr. Burns, and in the very last moments of the episode, Mr. Burns was shot and left for dead. FOX then started a promotion for people to guess who shot him, and fans of the show were left to guess about it all summer until the show came back in the fall.
The Simpsons is of course an animated half-hour comedy that FOX has been showing on Sunday night's for quite a while. It premiered back in 1994, and has been going strong ever since, even culminating in a feature length film that brought in a lot of money for its creators and distributors. Though some feel the show has lost some of its originality over the years, back in season six, they were coming to jokes for the first time, and really exploring a lot of the main characters quite well. The show follows the life of a family of five, Homer the dad, Marge the mom, Bart the trouble-maker, Lisa the brain of the family, and the baby named Maggie. There are many other supporting characters (dozens and dozens in fact) that pop up here and there, but the episodes primarily follow one of the family members as they go through comedic, yet realistically grounded events in their lives.
Some of the funny episodes that stand out from season 6 of The Simpsons include a few that pay homage to some classic films. One in particular is a play on the Alfred Hitchcock film Rear Window and puts Bart as the character stuck in his room, spying on the neighbors, after he breaks his leg early in the episode. Another is one of the funniest of The Simpsons episodes in my opinion, and takes its lead from a couple of Michael Chricton books called Westworld and Jurassic Park. They way it works, is that the family ends up going to Itchy and Scratchy Land, where robots take on the parts of the cartoon characters that the family likes watching. Unfortunately something goes awry, and the robots start fighting back against everyone on the island. It is extremely funny, and typical of some of the great thinking that the shows creators still had going for them. These are just a couple of the great 25 episodes in the Season 6 set.
Season 6 is another great season of The Simpsons, and fans of the show will really enjoy having this set of DVD's in their collection. The season had 25 episodes including a special Halloween episode, and that "Who Shot Mr. Burns" cliffhanger that make it a good nostalgia piece as well. There is one frustrating episode in the bunch, and that is one of their "clip episodes" where they just show clips rather than a real new episode, but at the time it was shown, nearly every sitcom-type show was doing it. Other than that, this is a very high quality season of The Simpsons, and well worth owning if you are a fan of the show. It is still very original in this season, and many of the jokes are being used for the first time, which really adds a lot to the overall humor value of the show. There are now two different packaging methods for this season, but I would highly recommend going for the typical box rather than the Homer shaped container that won't hold up. Season 6 is a highly recommended season of The Simpsons, and has become even more affordable recently.
