Sigma 50mm Macro lens with 1:1 magnification

Date of Review:  Dec 13, 2003
The Bottom Line: An excellent macro-lens producing outstanding image quality, from an independent lens maker. If you need a 50mm lens for macro and normal shooting, this is it.
Review: Introduction

If one looks for a specialized lens for a specific type of photography, such as macro, a camera s own manufacturer is the appropriate place to go. Nikon is best known for offering a whole range of lenses for macro photography...

a surprisingly good lens and well worth the money

Date of Review:  May 21, 2006
The Bottom Line: a worthy upgrade for your kit lens. It offers top-shelf performance, speed, construction and ergonomics for mid-range price. Makes you wonder why the other stuff costs so much!
Review: I have never been a huge fan of third party lenses, mostly because I always felt that the stuff made by Nikon and Canon was superior in almost every way (except price). I still hold that position with equipment designed for film, but the recent...

Had two of these; VERY BAD so far

Date of Review:  Aug 24, 2006
The Bottom Line: I really cannot recommend this lens, it is a perfect example of why to not cut corners on lens quality. Cheap and nasty!
Review: Maybe I have been unlucky with this lens as I have had very poor results. Surprising really when I have read good things about it from other users.

I bought this lens ironically to replace a 17-35mm Sigma EX lens that was very soft. This...

Pretty good macro lens.

Date of Review:  Oct 11, 2000
Review: Configuration.
I use this lens on a Nikon FM camera body. The lens has an auto-focus capability however since my Nikon is I use the lens in "manual" mode. This is not a big deal; I just have to manually focus / manipulate the f-stop.

Great professional grade lens

Date of Review:  Mar 28, 2001
The Bottom Line: Definately buy this lens if you are trying to decide between Nikon or Sigma.
Review: I am a professional newspaper photographer and I bought this lens when my old Nikon 50mm bit the dust. I usually stay away from the "off brands" but a friend had just bought a Sigma 105mm and was raving about the quality. I also needed a macro lens...

A professional lens at a consumer price

Date of Review:  Jun 24, 2005
Review: This lens is simply amazing.

- It is as sharp as any expensive Nikon or Canon lenses. So sharp that's only a hair behind the Nikkor 50mm 1.8.
- It is fast. At constant F2.8, it's the fastest wide-zoom lens you can get.
- The...
