The Story

Donkey has invited all of your favorite Shrek fictional characters to play a game of cards. When all of a sudden Donkey’s children run amuck making it impossible to play the card game. Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, Puss In Boots, Gingy, and Prince Charming have decided to put the kids to sleep by telling them stories of their past adventures!

How to Play

First you must choose who you want to play. Each character has a different amount of rounds with different opponents and in different places. Your four main fighting buttons are A, B, Y, and X. The B button is mainly used for jumping up and down. If you press B,B then you will be able to jump higher and farther.

A, Y and X are mainly attacking buttons, but Y and X are the real combo buttons. Combos are very important in this game. There are lots of different combos that you can make up yourself. A,Y and X are easily applied with the B button because after you are in the air you can plunge down on your opponent.

The way to defeat an opponent is to get super slams. You have a super slam meter on your bottom screen. It is a small tube that fills with water every time you hit your opponent. When the tube gets to one-hundred percent you must just hit your opponent and that is a super slam. Next to your tube there should be a small tube there with another percentage guage near it. That is your opponent’s tube. Your battles (in story mode) are 2 minutes long. When the time is up who ever has gotten the most super slams wins the battle. If you lose you will be given the decision to try again or to quit. If you win you will go on to the next battle. You have to go through about 6 of these battles as each character, and then you will have a boss battle.

Weapons

In each battle you will find many weapons lying around on the grounds. You will find swords, bombs, flutes, harpoons, fans, flags, and many more. Each weapon has a different value and a different ability. There are some that you only hit people off the head with. But some knock people out, some put your opponents to sleep, and some are just plain annoying.

When you walk over and get one of these weapons it doesn’t just appear in your hands! You must go to the inventory on your bottom screen, then get out the stylus pen and choose the weapon that you want. You can have three weapons at once.

If your opponent has a weapon and you are caught empty handed, there are two ways that you can knock it out of there hands. The first is if you have a super slam ready and you have a clear shot the hit them and they will land without a weapon. If you don’t have a super slam and your empty handed then run up to your opponent and press X, X , Y and they will fall to the ground losing their weapon and you get some more super slam points.

Potions, Chests, and Pinatas

When you are playing you will also find potions on the ground. These ones you don’t have to use the bottom screen for, they just automatically effect you. These potions can make you big, small, invincible, full super slam points, and super speed. You must note that these effects only last a little while don’t think it lasts forever.

I bet your wondering “What do chests and pinatas have to do with this game?” Well it has do with what is inside them. Inside these cases are “French flies” they are used to buy alternate costumes for your characters. That is in free play which I will be explaining in my next segment. You open the chests by hitting them or pouncing on them. Pinatas are hard to open. You need to hit them a few times but with a sword it’s easier.

Free Play

There are two types of free play first is mega challenge. These are like mini games. You can play Shremoney, Gingy Invaders, Whack-a-thelounius, and whack the piñata. Shremoney is just like mega memory. Cards are shown to you and you have to match them when they flip over. Gingy Invaders is just like the old game “space invaders”. You have to run around as gingy and shoot the invaders before they come to earth. Whack-a-thelounus is exactly like whack-a-mole you hit the little thelounus’ as the come up. All you have to do is tap their heads with the stylus. Whack the piñata is really fun. Donkey has been wrapped up in paper and (as Shrek) you must super slam him 5 times to beat the first round. Be careful Donkey only has to slam you three times to win.

The second type of free play game is Mejee. You can pick any character of your choosing to fight. Before I resume I would like to tell you that this is where the “French flies” come in. If you will notice there are two red spots next to your chosen character is. At the bottom there are numbers. Twelve French flies is the price of your first alternate costume. If you wish to purchase it you must simply tap the rectangle with your stylus pen and it will ask you “ Do you wish to purchase this alternate costume for 12 French Flies?” If you do press the check mark and you will be able to choose your alternate costume or your regular one. If you realized there are a lot of question marks in the selection of characters. Well you are able to unlock those characters in story mode.

In Majee after choosing your character and costume you must choose your area to fight in. There is a large selection from Shrek’s swamp to Gingy’s house. You can also unlock new areas in story mode. After that you may choose your opponent, time limit, amount of rounds , amount of opponents, and what division you want to be in. By pressing “customize” with your stylus.

What I Thought of This Game

This game is really great. It never really ends, I mean you can just keep playing it alone or with a friend. It’s really a humorous game too. I think it’s cool because of all the fairy tales clashing together. It’s cool how you can unlock and play Pinoccio , Little Red Riding Hood, and even witches!

I think that the graphics could be a lot better though. They say the game is in 3-D , but the peoples’ hands are flat and paper-like. I also think there should be more main levels to the game, and that it would expand, because they had a really great game going and it just ended quickly. Even though you can play the bonus levels and Mejee I still think the main story mode could be better.

This game was a joy to play and it still is. It is rated E-10 with crude humor and mild violence. If my instructions were confusing you can go to the single player menu and click training so you can learn more combos. You can buy Shrek Super Slam for $19.99.
